Here are Mother's Day ideas for church that honour moms and keep Jesus at the center, all built around a free 25-minute children's program. The children recite short poems, act out the story of Hannah, say Proverbs 31:28 together and give every mom a verse or a prayer, and everyone sings three hymns they already know. The printable planner has the order of service, a rehearsal plan, a parts list and a note for families.
The program at a glance
- Welcome poem by a preschooler, then What a Friend We Have in Jesus.
- Reading: Proverbs 31:25–31 (KJV), read by a teen or a dad.
- Poems: "Someone Dear", "A Little Coat" and "Honour" from our Mother's Day poems for church.
- The skit: our Hannah Mother's Day skit (5 minutes), with a narrator reading 1 Samuel 1–2.
- Jesus Loves Me, sung by the youngest.
- Poems: "Moses' Mother" and the M-O-T-H-E-R acrostic, with six children holding the letters.

- "Someone Special", then every child says Proverbs 31:28: "Her children arise up, and call her blessed."
- A prayer for mothers: the mothers, grandmothers and every woman who cares for children stand while the pastor prays. Our Mother's Day prayer page has one to read.
- A gift: the children hand out Bible verse cards about mothers or prayer cards, then everyone sings Count Your Blessings.
More Mother's Day ideas for church
- Honour every mother, not only the young moms: grandmothers, the oldest mother in the church, and the women who have taught Sunday school for years.
- Remember the women for whom Mother's Day is hard: those who have lost a child or their own mother, and those still praying for a child, as Hannah did (1 Samuel 1:10–11). Pray for them by name if they wish.
- Teach a Mother's Day lesson the week before: mothers in the Bible walks through eight of them, and the Hannah's prayer story set has a full lesson, craft and coloring page.
- Host a Mother's Day tea after church with the Mother's Day left right game and mothers in the Bible trivia, kids against moms.
- Learn the verse: send home our honour your father and mother memory verse sheet.
Tips for the program
- Few kids? One child can say two poems, and an adult can play Eli. The acrostic works with three children holding two letters each.
- Not every child has a mom at home. Let each child give their card to a grandma, an aunt, a foster mom or a teacher, and say so in the family note.
- Hymns: all three are public-domain classics a congregation can sing without practice.
Frequently asked questions
What can kids do for Mother's Day at church?
Recite short poems, act out Hannah's story, say Proverbs 31:28 together, and hand every mom and grandma a verse card or prayer card. This program puts all of it into about 25 minutes.
How do you honour mothers in a church service?
Ask the mothers, grandmothers and every woman who cares for children to stand, and pray over them in Jesus' name. Remember the moms who are tired, sick or grieving, and the women who long for a child, as Hannah did.
What songs can kids sing on Mother's Day at church?
Public-domain hymns everyone knows work best. This program uses What a Friend We Have in Jesus, Jesus Loves Me and Count Your Blessings, so no one has to learn a new song.
When should we start rehearsing?
Three weeks out. Hand out poems and skit parts that Sunday, then hold two 20-minute rehearsals on the next two Sundays.
