Choose your age level
- Preschool (ages 3–5), 20–30 minutes, 2 pages: a short story with hand motions and repeat-after-me lines, a baby doll in a basket and a blanket "river," three simple questions, a shortened memory verse ("For he shall give his angels charge over thee") with a motion, and a drawing activity.
- Kindergarten to 2nd grade, 45 minutes, 3 pages: the story in simple words, six recall questions with answers, and the Reeds by the River memory game with seven green paper strips.
- 3rd to 5th grade, 45–60 minutes, 3 pages: kids look up verses in their own Bibles during a fuller story (the brave midwives, the ark of bulrushes, Pharaoh's daughter paying Moses' own mother), five thinking questions and three recall questions, and a Bible look-up race.
- Preteens (ages 11–12), 45–60 minutes, 3 pages: students read Exodus 1 and 2 out loud themselves, then discuss faith that is bigger than fear, obeying God over people, and how God turns bad things around. Six discussion questions, a journal page, and two memory verses (Psalm 91:11 and Hebrews 11:23).

Tips for teaching baby Moses
- Read Exodus 2:10 straight from your Bible. The name Moses comes with its own explanation: "I drew him out of the water."
- Exodus 2 never names Moses' sister or his parents. The lessons call her "his sister," just as the passage does; Numbers 26:59 later names Miriam, and Exodus 6:20 names Amram and Jochebed.
- The King James Bible calls the basket an "ark of bulrushes." Each lesson explains the old words in plain language.
- Keep Pharaoh's order simple and calm for young kids. The story's focus is God's care, not the danger.
- Short on time? Do the story, three questions and the memory verse. That is a solid 25-minute lesson.
Frequently asked questions
How long does this Baby Moses lesson take?
It depends on the age level. The preschool lesson takes 20 to 30 minutes, the kindergarten to 2nd grade lesson about 45 minutes, and the 3rd to 5th grade and preteen lessons 45 to 60 minutes. For a short class, do the story, three questions and the memory verse.
What age is this lesson for?
All ages from preschool to preteen. The lesson comes in four separate teacher PDFs: preschool (ages 3 to 5), kindergarten to 2nd grade, 3rd to 5th grade, and preteens (ages 11 to 12). Each one tells the same Bible story at the right length and reading level, with its own questions and activity.
What is the main point of the baby Moses story for kids?
God watches over His people and has a plan, even when things look scary. He kept baby Moses safe through his mother, his sister and Pharaoh's daughter (Exodus 2:1–10).
Why was baby Moses put in a basket?
Pharaoh ordered that every Hebrew baby boy be thrown into the river (Exodus 1:22). Moses' mother hid him for three months, then made an "ark of bulrushes" (a little basket-boat woven from tall water plants), sealed it with slime and pitch, and laid it in the reeds by the river (Exodus 2:2–3).
Was Moses' sister Miriam?
Exodus 2 doesn't give her name; it just says "his sister" (2:4, 2:7). Later the Bible names Miriam as the sister of Moses and Aaron (Numbers 26:59; Exodus 15:20).
Is this Sunday school lesson really free?
Yes. Print as many copies as you need for your church, school or home. Please don't resell it.
