A Mother's Day skit for church about Hannah, the mother who prayed for a son and kept her promise. A narrator reads the story straight from 1 Samuel 1–2 in the King James Bible while the children act it out: Hannah prays at Shiloh, Eli the priest blesses her, Samuel is born, Hannah brings him to serve the LORD, and every year she makes him a little coat. It takes about five minutes and works with just two rehearsals.
How it runs:
- Hannah prays at Shiloh, and Eli says, "Go in peace" (1 Samuel 1:10–18).
- Samuel is born, "Because I have asked him of the LORD" (1 Samuel 1:20).
- Hannah keeps her promise and brings Samuel to the house of the LORD (1 Samuel 1:26–28; 2:1).
- The little coat she made him every year (1 Samuel 2:19, 26).
- Finale: every child says 1 Samuel 1:27, the memory verse of our Hannah's prayer story set, and gives a card to their mom, grandma or someone who cares for them like a mom.
Tips
- Costumes: long robes or dresses and a head covering for Hannah; bathrobes and towels for Elkanah and Eli. Keep every costume modest and ankle-length.
- Samuel has no lines, so your littlest actor can do it. Hannah's big line is a Bible verse, so give it to a confident reader.
- Practice the walking, not the words. Tape an X on the floor for Eli's chair.
- Finish with a gift: our Mother's Day prayer cards and Bible verses about mothers are the right size to hand out.
The skit is one part of our Mother's Day ideas for church program. Read Hannah's story with other moms of the Bible in mothers in the Bible, or play the Mother's Day left right game, which retells it with a gift to pass.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Hannah a good Mother's Day story?
Hannah prayed for a son, God answered, and she kept her promise to give Samuel to the LORD. Every year she made him a little coat (1 Samuel 2:19). She shows children a mother who prays and loves.
How long is this Mother's Day skit?
About 5 minutes. The narrator carries the story with King James readings, and the children have a short line or a simple action each.
How many children do we need?
As few as four (Hannah, Elkanah, Eli and a small Samuel), or as many as you have. Extra children play Elkanah's family and the worshippers at Shiloh.
Are the narrator's words from the Bible?
Yes. Everything the narrator reads in quotation marks is 1 Samuel 1–2 in the King James Version. Hannah's line in scene 3 is 1 Samuel 1:27.
