Hannah's Prayer

A Mother's Day prayer for your church service, and twelve short prayer cards children can pray for their mom, their grandma, or someone who cares for them like a mom. Each card has a simple prayer that ends in Jesus' name and one King James verse that goes with it. Print the cards, cut them apart, and let each child choose one to pray in class and take home.

A Mother's Day prayer for church

Ask the mothers, grandmothers and every woman who cares for children to stand, and pray:

Lord Jesus, thank You for the mothers in our church: for moms and grandmothers, for aunts, foster and adoptive moms, and for every teacher who loves our children. Clothe them with strength and honour, and fill their mouths with wisdom and kindness (Proverbs 31:25–26). Give rest to the mothers who are tired, healing to those who are sick, and comfort to those who are grieving or missing their own mothers today. Be near to every woman who is praying for a child, as Hannah prayed. Help our children honour the people You have given to care for them, and let Your Word be taught in every home. In Jesus' name, amen.

The 12 prayer cards

  • For my mom: Dear God, thank You for my mom. Thank You for every meal she makes and every hug she gives. Make her strong and happy today. In Jesus' name, amen. “Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.” (Proverbs 31:25, KJV)
  • For my grandma: Dear God, thank You for my grandma and for all she teaches me about You. Bless her and keep her well. In Jesus' name, amen. “When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.” (2 Timothy 1:5, KJV)
  • For someone who cares for me: Dear God, thank You for the one who takes care of me like a mom. Thank You for her love and her help. Please bless her today. In Jesus' name, amen. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” (James 1:17, KJV)
  • Help me honour her: Dear God, help me to listen the first time, to obey with a happy heart, and to help without being asked. In Jesus' name, amen. “Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.” (Ephesians 6:1, KJV)
  • When she is tired: Dear God, when my mom is tired, please give her rest. Help me to be kind and to help out at home. In Jesus' name, amen. “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28, KJV)
  • Thank You for her prayers: Dear God, thank You that my mom prays for me, like Hannah prayed for Samuel. Teach me to pray for her too. In Jesus' name, amen. “For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him:” (1 Samuel 1:27, KJV)
  • For moms who are sick or far away: Dear God, please be with every mom who is sick, sad or far away today. Comfort her and help her. In Jesus' name, amen. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1, KJV)
  • For new moms and babies: Dear God, bless the new babies at our church and their moms. Help them grow up loving You. In Jesus' name, amen. “Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.” (Psalm 127:3, KJV)
  • For those who teach me Your Word: Dear God, thank You for the moms, grandmas and teachers who teach me Your Word. Help me to learn it and live it. In Jesus' name, amen. “And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 3:15, KJV)
  • Help me be kind at home: Dear God, help me to say kind words at home, to share, and to say sorry when I am wrong. In Jesus' name, amen. “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” (Ephesians 4:32, KJV)
  • Thank You for loving me: Dear God, thank You that You love me even more than anyone on earth can. Help me to love You and my family. In Jesus' name, amen. “We love him, because he first loved us.” (1 John 4:19, KJV)
  • For every mom at church: Dear God, bless every mom at our church today. Give them wisdom and kindness, and fill their homes with Your Word. In Jesus' name, amen. “She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.” (Proverbs 31:26, KJV)

Ways to use the cards

  • Pray in class: each child reads a card aloud, then takes it home for the person they prayed for.
  • A gift for every mom at church: tie a card to a flower or a treat and let the children hand them out after the Hannah skit.
  • A week of prayer: pray one card each night the week before Mother's Day.

Hannah prayed for her son, and God answered (1 Samuel 1:27): read her story in the Hannah's prayer story set and in mothers in the Bible. For verses to give with the cards, see Bible verses about mothers, and for the whole morning, our Mother's Day ideas for church.
