Scripture
Matthew 21:9; John 13:34; Romans 5:8; Matthew 28:6; 1 Corinthians 15:3–4

These are the Easter scriptures kids most need to know, all in the King James Version and in story order: the crowds crying "Hosanna", Jesus' new commandment at the Last Supper, the cross, the empty tomb, and what it all means for us. Print the cards, cut them apart and use them for:

  • Memory verses: one card a week in the weeks before Easter.
  • Easter cards: glue a verse inside a card a child makes for a neighbor or a shut-in.
  • Gift tags on treat bags for your Easter class or program.
  • A verse hunt: hide the cards around the room; whoever finds one reads it aloud.

The Easter story sets: the lessons, crafts, coloring pages and puzzles for The Triumphal Entry (memory verse Matthew 21:9), The Last Supper (John 13:34), Jesus Dies on the Cross (Romans 5:8) and Jesus Is Alive! (Matthew 28:6) tell the same story with the same memory verses. All four memory verses are on these cards.

The 16 verses

  • Matthew 21:9: “And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.”
  • John 13:34: “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.”
  • Isaiah 53:5: “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”
  • John 15:13: “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
  • Luke 23:34: “Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.”
  • John 19:30: “When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”
  • Romans 5:8: “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
  • 1 Peter 2:24: “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.”
  • Matthew 28:6: “He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.”
  • Luke 24:34: “Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.”
  • John 11:25: “Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:”
  • 1 Corinthians 15:3-4: “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”
  • Romans 6:4: “Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”
  • Acts 2:38: “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
  • 1 Corinthians 15:57: “But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
  • Revelation 1:18: “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.”

Talk about it

Read 1 Corinthians 15:3–4 together: Christ died for our sins, He was buried, and He rose again the third day. Then read Romans 6:4 and Acts 2:38. Ask: how do we obey the good news of Easter? We turn from our sins (repent), we are buried with Him by baptism in the name of Jesus Christ, and God gives us the gift of the Holy Ghost, so we can walk in newness of life.

Tips

Frequently asked questions

What is the main Bible verse for Easter?

Matthew 28:6: "He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay." 1 Corinthians 15:3–4 sums up the whole Easter message: Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day.

Where is the Easter story in the Bible?

In all four Gospels. Matthew 21–28, Mark 11–16, Luke 19–24 and John 12–21 tell of Jesus riding into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, the cross, the tomb and the resurrection.

What are short Easter verses for cards?

Luke 24:34 ("The Lord is risen indeed"), Romans 5:8, John 11:25 and 1 Corinthians 15:57 are short enough for a card or a gift tag.
