This free Sodom and Gomorrah Sunday school lesson teaches kids to obey God right away and not look back. When Lot lingered, the angels took him, his wife and his two daughters by the hand, "the LORD being merciful unto him," and brought them out of the city (Genesis 19:16). They were told, "Escape for thy life; look not behind thee" (19:17), and Jesus said, "Remember Lot's wife" (Luke 17:32). It comes in four age levels, each a separate printable teacher lesson, plus one take-home sheet for families. Everything is in the order you teach it.

Choose your age level

  • Preschool (ages 3–5), 20–30 minutes, 2 pages: a Hurry to Zoar game, a short story with hand motions and repeat-after-me lines, three simple questions, the memory verse ("Remember Lot's wife") with motions, and a drawing activity. The fire and the pillar of salt are left out, with a short answer if a child asks.
  • Kindergarten to 2nd grade, 45 minutes, 3 pages: the Eyes Forward game, the story in simple words, five recall questions with answers, a Don't Look Back verse game, and an Escape to Zoar game.
  • 3rd to 5th grade, 45–60 minutes, 3 pages: a Right Now! game, kids look up verses in their own Bibles during a fuller story (Lot lingers, God's mercy, Zoar, Lot's wife and God remembering Abraham), five thinking questions and three recall questions, and a Bible look-up race.
  • Preteens (ages 11–12), 45–60 minutes, 3 pages: students read Genesis 19:15–29 out loud themselves, then discuss lingering, God's mercy, looking back and being ready for Jesus' coming (Luke 17:28–33). Six discussion questions, a journal page, and two memory verses (Luke 17:32 and Luke 9:62).

Tips for teaching Sodom and Gomorrah

  • Keep the focus where Genesis 19:16 puts it: "the LORD being merciful unto him." This is a rescue story.
  • The lessons name Sodom's sin only in the Bible's general words (Genesis 13:13, 18:20) and don't go into detail. Each level has a short answer if a child asks why God destroyed the cities.
  • The story of Lot's earlier choice is in the Abram and Lot lesson.
  • Short on time? Do the story, three questions and the memory verse. That is a solid 25-minute lesson.

Frequently asked questions

How long does this Sodom and Gomorrah lesson take?

It depends on the age level. The preschool lesson takes 20 to 30 minutes, the kindergarten to 2nd grade lesson about 45 minutes, and the 3rd to 5th grade and preteen lessons 45 to 60 minutes. For a short class, do the story, three questions and the memory verse.

What is the main point of Lot's escape from Sodom for kids?

Obey God right away. When Lot lingered, the angels took him, his wife and his two daughters by the hand, "the LORD being merciful unto him," and brought them out of the city (Genesis 19:16). They were told, "look not behind thee" (19:17). Jesus said, "Remember Lot's wife" (Luke 17:32).

How do you teach Sodom and Gomorrah to young children?

Keep the focus on God's mercy and on obeying right away. The lessons say what the Bible says, that the people of Sodom "were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly" (Genesis 13:13), without going into their sins, and they tell the fire and brimstone once, in the Bible's own words. The preschool telling leaves out what happened to Lot's wife and gives you a short answer if a child asks.

What happened to Lot's wife?

As they escaped, "his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt" (Genesis 19:26). Jesus used her as a warning: "Remember Lot's wife" (Luke 17:32).
