  • Scissors and a glue stick
  • The printed mountain page (page 3), one per child (harder level)

Steps

  1. Color the card: the sky light blue, the sun yellow, the ground green and the road brown. Leave the step between the two short solid lines white.Color the card: the sky light blue, the sun yellow, the ground green and the road brown. Leave the step between the two short solid lines white.
  2. Color Zoar: the hill green, the wall gray, and the gate and the houses brown.
  3. Cut out the card, Zoar and the verse strip on the dashed lines. Help younger children with the cutting.
  4. Fold the card in half on the long dotted line, with the colored side on the outside. Cut the two short solid lines through both layers, starting at the fold.
  5. Fold the flap between the two cuts forward and back on its dotted line, and press hard. Open the card, fold it the other way so the colored side is inside, and push the flap to the inside as you close it. Press it shut. When you open the card, a little step pops up.
  6. Open the card like an L, with the sky standing up. Put glue on the bottom of the back of Zoar and press it on the front of the step (the dotted glue spot), with the bottom edges lined up. Zoar stands at the end of the road.
  7. Close the card. Glue the verse strip on the back of the bottom half and read it together.
  8. Tell it: open the card as the morning arose. The angel said, "Escape for thy life; look not behind thee" (Genesis 19:17). Lot ran to the little city, and "the sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar" (19:23).Tell it: open the card as the morning arose. The angel said, "Escape for thy life; look not behind thee" (Genesis 19:17). Lot ran to the little city, and "the sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar" (19:23).

This Sodom and Gomorrah craft turns one printed page into a pop-up card of Lot's escape. When Lot lingered, the angels took him, his wife and his two daughters by the hand, "the LORD being merciful unto him," and brought them out of the city (Genesis 19:16). The angel said, "Escape for thy life; look not behind thee" (19:17), and Lot ran to a little city called Zoar. When kids open the card, Zoar stands up at the end of the road under the sun, because "the sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar" (19:23). It comes in three levels, with the template and teacher notes in one free PDF.

The finished craft, harder level

What it looks like finished: easy and medium (first photo) and harder (second photo).

Why this craft works

  • Cheap and simple: one printed page, glue, crayons and scissors.
  • Kids can tell the story with it: open the card as the morning arose (Genesis 19:15), follow the road forward without looking back (19:17), and watch Zoar stand up in the sunshine (19:23).
  • It follows the Bible closely: the little city, the road away from Sodom and the risen sun come from Genesis 19:17–23. Sodom, the fire and Lot's wife are not shown.
  • It points to God's mercy: God brought Lot out by the hand (19:16) and said yes to his request for the little city (19:21).
  • It carries the verse home: Luke 17:32 (KJV), "Remember Lot's wife," is glued on the back of the card.

Three ways to make it

  • Easy (preschool, ages 3–5): you cut out the pieces and pop up the step. Kids color and glue Zoar on the step. No scissors.
  • Medium (grades K–2): the craft in the first photo. Kids color, cut, fold and glue the pieces themselves, with help on the two short cuts.
  • Harder (grades 3–5): the craft in the second photo. Kids also glue a mountain from page 3 in the sky, the mountain the angel first told Lot to escape to (Genesis 19:17).

Questions to ask

While kids work, ask when the angels told Lot to hurry (Genesis 19:15), what Lot did instead (19:16), why the angels took their hands (19:16), what the angel said (19:17), what Lot said about the little city (19:20), and when he got to Zoar (19:23). Then read Luke 17:32 together.

Tips for the classroom

Cardstock makes the step pop up crisp. Press every crease hard. For preschoolers, cut and pop up the cards ahead of time. Keep the talk on God's mercy and on obeying right away: the lesson covers the rest of the story.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a simple Sodom and Gomorrah craft for preschoolers?

Cut out, fold and pop up each child's card ahead of time, and cut out Zoar and the verse strip. Preschoolers color the sky, the sun, the ground, the road and the little city, then glue Zoar on the step with your help. It takes about 15 minutes with no cutting by the kids.

How much does this Sodom and Gomorrah craft cost?

Under 50 cents a child: one printed page (cardstock is best) and the crayons and glue stick you already have. The template is free to print. The harder level adds a second page.

What Bible verse goes with this craft?

Luke 17:32 (KJV), "Remember Lot's wife." Jesus said it to warn us not to look back. It is printed on the verse strip that goes on the back of the card.

How can older kids make this craft harder?

Use the harder level for grades 3–5. Kids also color and cut out the mountain on page 3 and glue it on the dotted shape in the sky, because the angel first said, "escape to the mountain," and Lot asked to go to the little city instead (Genesis 19:17–22).
