This free Abram and Lot Sunday school lesson teaches kids to be peacemakers. When their herdmen began to fight, Abram said, "Let there be no strife... for we be brethren," and let Lot choose first (Genesis 13:8–9). Then God promised Abram all the land he could see. It comes in four age levels, each a separate printable teacher lesson, plus one take-home sheet for families. Pick the one that fits your class. Everything is in the order you teach it.
Choose your age level
- Preschool (ages 3–5), 20–30 minutes, 2 pages: a short story with hand motions and repeat-after-me lines, a box too full of toy animals, three simple questions, a shortened memory verse ("Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee") with motions, and a drawing activity.
- Kindergarten to 2nd grade, 45 minutes, 3 pages: a too-many-animals opening game, the story in simple words, five recall questions with answers, the Peace Pass verse game with six cards, and a Left or Right question game.
- 3rd to 5th grade, 45–60 minutes, 4 pages: kids look up verses in their own Bibles during a fuller story (the altar between Bethel and Hai, the well watered plain of Jordan, the promise to look north, south, east and west, and the dust of the earth), five thinking questions and three recall questions, and a Bible look-up race.
- Preteens (ages 11–12), 45–60 minutes, 4 pages: students read Genesis 13 out loud themselves, then discuss stopping strife, giving up first choice, choosing by sight and trusting God. Six discussion questions, a journal page, and two memory verses (Genesis 13:8 and Romans 12:18).
Lesson at a glance
- Bible passage: Genesis 13:1–18
- Main point: Be a peacemaker. Stop the fighting and let others go first; God takes care of you.

- Ages: preschool to preteen, in four versions
Lesson outline (the same in every version)
- Opening game: a short game about too many animals, or about who goes first.
- Bible story: Abram and Lot have too many flocks and herds to stay together, their herdmen fight, Abram says "Let there be no strife" and lets Lot choose, Lot chooses the plain of Jordan, and God promises Abram the land. Every fact has its verse reference so you can check it.
- Questions to ask: with answers, at the right level for each age.
- Memory verse: a game or motion to help kids learn Genesis 13:8.
- What this means for us: being a peacemaker, peace with God through Jesus, the gospel (Acts 2:38), and a challenge for the week.
- Activity: the Abram and Lot word search, a drawing, a Left or Right game, a Bible look-up race or a journal page, depending on the age.
- Prayer.
Tips for teaching Abram and Lot
- Let kids hear Genesis 13:8 read straight from the Bible. It is the heart of the story: Abram stopped the strife because "we be brethren."
- Point out the two "lift up your eyes" moments: Lot looked and chose for himself (13:10), and then God told Abram to look and gave him all of it (13:14–15).
- Explain "brethren" simply: Lot was Abram's nephew, the son of Abram's brother (Genesis 11:31). They were family.
- The men of Sodom are only named in Genesis 13:13. Each lesson has a short, gentle answer if a child asks about them.
- Short on time? Do the story, three questions and the memory verse. That is a solid 25-minute lesson.
Frequently asked questions
How long does this Abram and Lot lesson take?
It depends on the age level. The preschool lesson takes 20 to 30 minutes, the kindergarten to 2nd grade lesson about 45 minutes, and the 3rd to 5th grade and preteen lessons 45 to 60 minutes. For a short class, do the story, three questions and the memory verse.
What is the story of Abram and Lot about for kids?
Abram and his nephew Lot had so many animals that the land could not hold them together, and their herdmen began to quarrel. Abram said, "Let there be no strife... for we be brethren," and let Lot choose where to go (Genesis 13:8–9). Lot chose the plain of Jordan, and God promised Abram all the land he could see (13:14–15).
What does "for we be brethren" mean?
It means "we are family." Lot was the son of Abram's brother Haran (Genesis 11:31, 14:12), so Abram was his uncle. Abram did not want his own family to fight, so he made peace first and let Lot choose (Genesis 13:8–9).
Is this Sunday school lesson really free?
