Talk about it: Saul and his servant went up the hill to the city and asked, "Is the seer here?" (1 Samuel 9:11). The LORD had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came (1 Samuel 9:15). Samuel poured oil upon Saul's head and said, "the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance" (1 Samuel 10:1).

Use them after the Samuel Anoints Saul Sunday school lesson, with the crossword and word search.

The Bible story

Saul, the son of Kish, was "a choice young man, and a goodly," higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward. When his father's asses were lost, Saul and a servant went to seek them and came to Samuel the seer, and the LORD had told Samuel a day before that He would send him a man out of the land of Benjamin to be captain over His people Israel. Samuel took a vial of oil, poured it upon Saul's head, and said, "Is it not because the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?" Later at Mizpeh Saul hid himself among the stuff, but when he stood among the people, they shouted, "God save the king." Read the whole story in 1 Samuel 9:1–10:1; 1 Samuel 10:17–24 (KJV).

Memory verse: "Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?" (1 Samuel 10:1, KJV). It is printed on every level.

Using the mazes in class

  • Tell the story first, then let kids trace the path with a finger before they use a pencil or crayon.
  • Say the memory verse together when they reach the end, then read the "Talk about it" box on the sheet.

Answer keys
