- Scripture
- 1 Samuel 9:1–10:1; 1 Samuel 10:17–24
- Bible story
- Samuel Anoints Saul
What you need
- The printed template (page 2), one per child (cardstock is sturdiest)
- Crayons or markers in light blue, light brown, brown, green, yellow, gray, purple and blue, plus any colors for drawing Samuel and Saul
- Scissors and a glue stick
- The printed Mizpeh page (page 3), one per child (harder level)
Steps
- Color the card: the sky light blue, the city wall light brown, the gate brown, the grass green and the two oil drops yellow. Leave the three dotted shapes white.

- In the shorter window, draw Samuel, an old man, and color the frame purple. In the taller window, draw Saul, a tall young man, and color the frame blue. Color the vial gray.
- Cut out the card, the Samuel window, the Saul window, the vial and the verse strip on the dashed lines.
- Glue the Samuel window on the shorter dotted arch and the Saul window on the taller dotted arch. Glue the vial on its dotted shape above them, so its open end points down at Saul's head and the yellow oil drops.
- Glue the verse strip on the back of the card. Read it together.
- Tell it: Saul went to seek his father's lost asses and came to Samuel the seer (1 Samuel 9:3, 9:18–19). The LORD had told Samuel the day before, "I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin" (9:16). Point to the vial: Samuel took a vial of oil and poured it upon Saul's head (10:1).

This Samuel anoints Saul craft turns one printed page into the end of the city, where Samuel told Saul to "stand thou still a while" (1 Samuel 9:27). Kids draw Samuel and tall Saul in their windows and set the vial over Saul's head, because "Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head" (10:1).

What it looks like finished: easy and medium (first photo) and harder (second photo).
Why this craft works
- Cheap and simple: one printed page, a glue stick, crayons and scissors.
- Kids see how tall Saul was: his window is taller than Samuel's, because from his shoulders up he was higher than any of the people (1 Samuel 9:2).
- It shows God guiding Saul's steps: Saul went looking for lost asses, but the LORD had already told Samuel he was coming (9:15–16).
- It carries the verse home: 1 Samuel 10:1 (KJV), the memory verse for the whole Samuel anoints Saul set, is glued on the back of the card.
Three ways to make it
- Easy (preschool, ages 3–5): you cut out the pieces. Kids color, draw Samuel and Saul, and glue each piece on its dotted shape. No scissors.
- Medium (grades K–2): the craft in the first photo. Kids color, draw, cut out the pieces and glue them.
- Harder (grades 3–5): the craft in the second photo. Kids add a fold-out Mizpeh panel from page 3, where a flap of sacks hides Saul: "he hath hid himself among the stuff" (1 Samuel 10:22).
Questions to ask
While kids work, ask how tall Saul was (1 Samuel 9:2), what he was looking for (9:3), who told Samuel he was coming (9:15–16), what Samuel did with the vial (10:1) and what the people shouted (10:24). Then read 1 Samuel 10:1 together.
Tips for the classroom
For preschoolers, cut out the pieces ahead of time, so all they do is color, draw and glue. The Bible says a vial of oil, not a horn, and names no crown (1 Samuel 10:1).

Frequently asked questions
How do you make a simple Samuel anoints Saul craft for preschoolers?
Cut out each child's card, two windows, vial and verse strip ahead of time. Preschoolers color the card, draw Samuel and Saul in their windows (or color them in), and glue each piece on its dotted shape. It takes about 15 minutes with no cutting by the kids.
How much does this Samuel anoints Saul craft cost?
Under 50 cents a child: one printed page, a glue stick and crayons you already have. The template is free to print. The harder level adds a second page.
What Bible verse goes with this craft?
1 Samuel 10:1 (KJV), "Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?" It is the memory verse for the whole Samuel anoints Saul set, printed on the verse strip that kids glue on the back.
How can older kids make this craft harder?
Use the harder level for grades 3–5. Kids add a fold-out Mizpeh panel from page 3, where Saul hid himself among the stuff (1 Samuel 10:22). A flap of sacks covers him; lift it to find him, and shout what the people shouted: "God save the king" (10:24).
