This free Abraham and Sarah Sunday school lesson teaches kids that Abram believed God: he left his home when God said go, and when God told him to count the stars, "he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness" (Genesis 15:6). It comes in four age levels, each a separate printable teacher lesson, plus one take-home sheet for families. Pick the one that fits your class. Everything is in the order you teach it.
Choose your age level
- Preschool (ages 3–5), 20–30 minutes, 2 pages: a pack-and-go walk, a short story with hand motions and repeat-after-me lines, three simple questions, a shortened memory verse ("And he believed in the LORD") with a motion, and a count-the-stars activity.
- Kindergarten to 2nd grade, 45 minutes, 3 pages: the Follow Me game, the story in simple words, five recall questions with answers, the Star Verse game with five paper stars, and a north, south, east and west game.
- 3rd to 5th grade, 45–60 minutes, 4 pages: a mystery-trip game, kids look up verses in their own Bibles during a fuller story (Ur and Haran, Lot's choice, the rescue of Lot, Melchizedek, the stars), five thinking questions and three recall questions, and a Bible look-up race.
- Preteens (ages 11–12), 45–60 minutes, 3 pages: a "one bag" opening, students read Genesis 12, 13 and 15 out loud themselves (including Abram's fear in Egypt), then discuss obeying without knowing where, giving God the credit and believing while we wait. Six discussion questions, a journal page, and two memory verses (Genesis 15:6 and Hebrews 11:8).
Lesson at a glance
- Bible passage: Genesis 12–15
- Main point: Abram believed God and obeyed Him. We can believe what God says, too.
- Memory verse: Genesis 15:6 (KJV), with Hebrews 11:8 added for preteens
- Ages: preschool to preteen, in four versions
- The names: Genesis 12–15 calls them Abram and Sarai. God gave them the names Abraham and Sarah later (Genesis 17:5, 17:15), so the lesson uses Abram and Sarai in the story.
Lesson outline (the same in every version)
- Opening game: a short game about following without knowing where you're going.
- Bible story: God calls Abram to leave Haran at seventy-five (Genesis 12:1–4), the altar and the tent (12:7–8), Abram lets Lot choose first (13:8–11), God's promise of the land, Abram rescues Lot (14:14–16), and God shows Abram the stars: "So shall thy seed be" (15:5). Every fact has its verse reference so you can check it.
- Questions to ask: with answers, at the right level for each age.
- Memory verse: a game or motion to help kids learn Genesis 15:6.
- What this means for us: faith that believes and obeys, the gospel (Acts 2:38), and a challenge for the week.
- Activity: the Abraham and Sarah word search, the crossword, the maze, the worksheet, the Abraham and Sarah craft, a look-up race or a journal page, depending on the age.
- Prayer.
Tips for teaching God's promise to Abraham
- Read Genesis 15:5–6 straight from your Bible. It is the heart of the story: Abram couldn't count the stars, and he believed God anyway.
- Get the facts right: Abram was seventy-five when he left Haran (Genesis 12:4), and he took 318 trained servants to rescue Lot (14:14).
- The younger levels leave out Abram's time in Egypt, the battle of the kings and the covenant animals; each lesson tells you what was left out so you can read it first.
- Isaac's birth is the next story. If kids ask whether the promise came true, the answer is yes (Genesis 21:2).
- Short on time? Do the story, three questions and the memory verse. That is a solid 25-minute lesson.
Frequently asked questions
How long does this Abraham and Sarah lesson take?
It depends on the age level. The preschool lesson takes 20 to 30 minutes, the kindergarten to 2nd grade lesson about 45 minutes, and the 3rd to 5th grade and preteen lessons 45 to 60 minutes. For a short class, do the story, three questions and the memory verse.
What is the main point of God's promise to Abraham for kids?
Abram believed God. God told him to leave his home, and he went (Genesis 12:1, 12:4). God told him to look at the stars and said, "So shall thy seed be," and Abram believed in the LORD, and God counted it to him for righteousness (Genesis 15:5–6).
Why does the lesson say Abram and Sarai instead of Abraham and Sarah?
Because that is what the Bible calls them in Genesis 12–15. God changed their names to Abraham and Sarah later, in Genesis 17:5 and 17:15. The lesson uses the names the way the Bible gives them at this point in the story.
How old was Abraham when God called him?
Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran (Genesis 12:4). He and Sarai still had no children when God showed him the stars (Genesis 15:2–3).
