These Father's Day Bible verses are all in the King James Version: what God asks of fathers, what He asks of children, and the best news of all, that God Himself is a Father to everyone who comes to Him. Print the cards, cut them apart and use them for:

  • Cards for Dad: glue a verse inside a card a child makes for their dad, grandpa, or someone who cares for them like a dad.
  • Memory verses: one card a week through June.
  • The Father's Day service: hand a card to every man as he comes in, or let the children give them out.
  • A verse hunt: hide the cards around the room; whoever finds one reads it aloud.

The 16 verses

  • Exodus 20:12: “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.”
  • Psalm 68:5: “A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.”
  • Psalm 103:13: “Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.”
  • Proverbs 1:8: “My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:”
  • Proverbs 3:12: “For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.”
  • Proverbs 4:1: “Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.”
  • Proverbs 17:6: “Children’s children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.”
  • Proverbs 20:7: “The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.”
  • Proverbs 22:6: “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
  • Proverbs 23:24: “The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.”
  • Matthew 6:9: “After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.”
  • Matthew 7:11: “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?”
  • Luke 15:20: “And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.”
  • Ephesians 6:4: “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.”
  • James 1:17: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”
  • 1 John 3:1: “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.”

Talk about it

Read Psalm 103:13 and Luke 15:20 together. Ask: what did the father in Jesus' story do when he saw his son coming home? (He had compassion, ran to him, fell on his neck and kissed him.) Jesus told that story so we would know what God is like. Then read Matthew 6:9: Jesus taught us to pray, "Our Father which art in heaven." Malachi 2:10 asks, "Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us?"

Tips

  • Print on cardstock so the cards last. One sheet makes 8 cards.
  • Little ones: start with the short verses (Exodus 20:12, Proverbs 20:7, Proverbs 4:1) and say them together.
  • Not every child has a dad at home. Say "your dad, or someone who cares for you like a dad", and let them give their card to a grandpa, an uncle, a pastor or a teacher.
  • Jesus' story of the father who ran is the prodigal son story set (memory verse 1 John 1:9). See also fathers in the Bible and the Father's Day prayer cards.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Bible verse for Father's Day?

Proverbs 20:7 is a favorite: "The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him." For little ones, Exodus 20:12 ("Honour thy father and thy mother") is short and easy to learn.

What does the Bible say about fathers?

Fathers are to teach their children God's ways (Proverbs 4:1, Ephesians 6:4), and children are to honour them (Exodus 20:12). Psalm 103:13 says the LORD cares for His people the way a father cares for his children.

What if a child doesn't have a dad at home?

Let them give a card to a grandpa, an uncle, a pastor or any man who cares for them like a dad, and read Psalm 68:5 together: God is "A father of the fatherless." Malachi 2:10 says we all have one Father, one God who made us.
