- Ages
- Preschool (3–5), Early Elementary (K–2), Upper Elementary (3–5)
- Time
- 15 to 30 minutes
- Scripture
- Genesis 16:6–13; Genesis 21:14–20
- Bible story
- Hagar and the God Who Sees
What you need
- The printed template (page 2), one per child (cardstock is sturdiest)
- Crayons or markers in light blue, yellow, green, brown, gray and blue
- Scissors and a glue stick
- The printed window page (page 3), one per child (harder level)
Steps
- Color the card: the sky light blue, the sun and the sand yellow, the shrub green, both bottles brown, the well gray and the water in the well blue.

- Color the flap: the sky light blue, the sand yellow and the shrubs green.
- Cut out the card, the flap and the verse strip on the dashed lines. Help younger children with the cutting.
- Crease the flap on its dotted line. Put glue on the back of the tab only and press it on the dotted strip at the top of the card's right side, so the flap hangs down and covers the well.
- Turn the card over. Glue the verse strip on the back and read it together.
- Tell it: point to the empty bottle by the shrub. "The water was spent in the bottle" (Genesis 21:15), and Hagar wept, but "God heard the voice of the lad" (21:17). Lift the flap: "God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water" (21:19). Point to the full bottle and say, "Thou God seest me" (16:13).

This Hagar craft turns one printed page into a lift-the-flap card of the wilderness of Beer-sheba. When "the water was spent in the bottle" (Genesis 21:15), Hagar wept, but "God heard the voice of the lad" (21:17). Kids color the dry wilderness and the empty bottle, then lift the flap: "God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water" (21:19). It helps kids remember what Hagar called the LORD: "Thou God seest me" (16:13). It comes in three levels, with the template and teacher notes in one free PDF.

What it looks like finished: easy and medium (first photo) and harder (second photo).
Why this craft works
- Cheap and simple: one printed page, glue, crayons and scissors.
- Kids can tell the story with it: point to the empty bottle, then lift the flap to find the well of water and the full bottle (Genesis 21:15–19).
- It follows the Bible closely: the bread and bottle, the shrub, the well and the filled bottle all come from Genesis 21:14–19, and no angel is drawn.
- It points to God: God saw Hagar, heard the lad and opened her eyes (16:13, 21:17, 21:19).
- It carries the verse home: Genesis 16:13 (KJV) is glued on the back of the card.
Three ways to make it
- Easy (preschool, ages 3–5): you cut out the pieces and glue on the flap. Kids color and lift the flap. No scissors.
- Medium (grades K–2): the craft in the first photo. Kids color, cut out and glue the pieces themselves.
- Harder (grades 3–5): the craft in the second photo. Kids also add an arched window under the flap and draw Hagar giving the lad a drink (Genesis 21:19).
Questions to ask
While kids work, ask where the angel of the LORD found Hagar (Genesis 16:7), what she called the LORD (16:13), what happened to the water in the bottle (21:15), whose voice God heard (21:17), and what Hagar saw when God opened her eyes (21:19). Then read Genesis 16:13 together.
Tips for the classroom
Cardstock keeps the flap stiff enough to lift many times. For preschoolers, cut out the pieces and glue the flaps on ahead of time. Talk about how God saw Hagar and heard the lad, and how He sees and hears us too.

Frequently asked questions
How do you make a simple Hagar craft for preschoolers?
Cut out each child's card, flap and verse strip ahead of time, and glue the flap on for them. Preschoolers color the wilderness, the bottles and the well, then lift the flap to find the water. It takes about 15 minutes with no cutting by the kids.
How much does this Hagar craft cost?
Under 50 cents a child: one printed page, a little glue, and crayons you already have. The template is free to print. The harder level adds a second page.
What Bible verse goes with this craft?
Genesis 16:13 (KJV), "And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?" It is printed on the verse strip that goes on the back of the card.
How can older kids make this craft harder?
Use the harder level for grades 3–5. Kids add an arched window from page 3 beside the well, under the flap, and draw Hagar giving the lad a drink, because she "filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink" (Genesis 21:19).
