What you need

  • The printed template (page 2), one per child (cardstock is sturdiest)
  • Crayons or markers in light blue, green, brown, gray, tan and yellow, plus any colors for drawing people
  • Scissors and a glue stick
  • A 2-inch piece of red yarn per child (the scarlet line)
  • The printed family window page (page 3), one per child (harder level)

Steps

  1. Color the card: the sky light blue, the mountain green, the ground brown, the wall gray, the house tan and the roof brown. Leave the window, the two ovals and the dotted box white.Color the card: the sky light blue, the mountain green, the ground brown, the wall gray, the house tan and the roof brown. Leave the window, the two ovals and the dotted box white.
  2. In the two ovals above the roof, draw the two men, lying down and hidden (Joshua 2:6).
  3. Color the flax flap: the stalks yellow and the tab brown. Cut out the card, the flax flap and the verse strip on the dashed lines. Help younger children with the cutting.
  4. Bend the flap's tab on the dotted line. Put glue on the tab only and press it on the roof, so the flax lies over the two men. Lift the flax to find them!
  5. Glue one end of the red yarn on the dot in the window so it hangs down the wall. It is the scarlet line (Joshua 2:18, 2:21).
  6. Turn the card over. Glue the verse strip on the back and read it together.
  7. Tell it: the king said, "Bring forth the men" (Joshua 2:3), but Rahab "hid them with the stalks of flax" on her roof (2:6). She said, "the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath" (2:11). She let them down by a cord through the window (2:15), and she bound the scarlet line in the window (2:21).Tell it: the king said, "Bring forth the men" (Joshua 2:3), but Rahab "hid them with the stalks of flax" on her roof (2:6). This Rahab craft turns one printed page into Rahab's house on the town wall of Jericho. When the king of Jericho said, "Bring forth the men" (Joshua 2:3), Rahab had brought the two men "up to the roof of the house, and hid them with the stalks of flax" (Joshua 2:6). Kids draw the two men on the roof, glue a paper flap of flax over them to lift, and glue a real red yarn line in the window, because Rahab "bound the scarlet line in the window" (2:21). She believed that "the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath" (2:11). It comes in three levels, with the template and teacher notes in one free PDF.

The finished craft, harder level

What it looks like finished: easy and medium (first photo) and harder (second photo).

Why this craft works

  • Cheap and simple: one printed page, two inches of red yarn, glue, crayons and scissors.
  • Kids can tell the story with it: hide the two men under the flax, lift it to find them, and point to the scarlet line in the window.
  • It follows the Bible closely: the flax on the roof (Joshua 2:6), the house upon the town wall (2:15) and the scarlet line in the window (2:18, 2:21) all come from the text.
  • It points to God: Rahab heard what the LORD had done and said He "is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath" (2:11).
  • It carries the verse home: Joshua 2:11 (KJV) is glued on the back of the card.

Three ways to make it

  • Easy (preschool, ages 3–5): you cut out the pieces. Kids color, draw the two men and color the flax, and you help them glue the flap and the yarn. No scissors.
  • Medium (grades K–2): the craft in the first photo. Kids color, draw, cut out and glue the pieces themselves.
  • Harder (grades 3–5): the craft in the second photo. Kids also draw Rahab's family in a window from page 3 and glue it on the house, because the men told her to bring "all thy father's household, home unto thee" (Joshua 2:18).

Questions to ask

While kids work, ask who Joshua sent to Jericho (Joshua 2:1), where Rahab hid them (2:6), what Jericho had heard about the LORD (2:10), what Rahab said about God (2:11), how the men got out (2:15), and what she bound in the window (2:21). Then read Joshua 2:11 together.

Tips for the classroom

Cardstock keeps the flax flap sturdy for lots of lifting. Cut the red yarn ahead of time. For preschoolers, cut out the pieces ahead of time and help with the glue. The craft shows what Rahab did because she believed; the lesson tells the rest of the story.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a simple Rahab craft for preschoolers?

Cut out each child's card, flax flap and verse strip ahead of time. Preschoolers color the card, draw the two men in the ovals on the roof and color the flax yellow. You help them glue the flap's tab on the roof and glue the red yarn in the window. Then they lift the flax to find the two men. It takes about 15 minutes with no cutting by the kids.

How much does this Rahab craft cost?

Under 50 cents a child: one printed page, two inches of red yarn, a little glue, and crayons you already have. The template is free to print. The harder level adds a second page.

What Bible verse goes with this craft?

Joshua 2:11 (KJV), where Rahab said, "And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath." It is printed on the verse strip that goes on the back of the card.

How can older kids make this craft harder?

Use the harder level for grades 3–5. Kids also draw Rahab's family in a window from page 3 and glue it on the house, because the men told her to "bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father's household, home unto thee" (Joshua 2:18).
