This free Rahab Sunday school lesson teaches kids to trust the LORD. Joshua sent two men to spy out Jericho, and Rahab hid them "with the stalks of flax" on her roof (Joshua 2:6). She said, "the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath" (2:11), let them down by a cord through her window on the town wall (2:15), and bound the scarlet line in the window (2:21). By faith she "perished not" (Hebrews 11:31). It comes in four age levels, each a separate printable teacher lesson, plus one take-home sheet for families. Everything is in the order you teach it.
Choose your age level
- Preschool (ages 3–5), 20–30 minutes, 2 pages: a hide-them-on-the-roof game, a short story with hand motions and repeat-after-me lines, three simple questions, a shortened memory verse ("the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath") with a motion, and a drawing activity.
- Kindergarten to 2nd grade, 45 minutes, 3 pages: the Find the Two Men game, the story in simple words, five recall questions with answers, the Scarlet Line Verse game with six paper strips on a red yarn line, and an Into the House game.
- 3rd to 5th grade, 45–60 minutes, 4 pages: a whisper game about hearing news, kids look up verses in their own Bibles during a fuller story (the flax on the roof, what Jericho heard about the Red sea, the promise, the scarlet line), five thinking questions and three recall questions, and a Bible look-up race.
- Preteens (ages 11–12), 45–60 minutes, 3 pages: students read Joshua 2 and Hebrews 11:31 out loud themselves, then discuss fear and faith, faith that acts, why the Bible tells the truth about people's wrongs, and praying for their families. Six discussion questions, a journal page, and two memory verses (Joshua 2:11 and Romans 10:17).

Tips for teaching Rahab
- Read Joshua 2:11 straight from your Bible. Rahab's faith came from hearing what the LORD had done (2:10).
- The Bible tells the truth about what Rahab said to the king's men (2:4–5), and it never praises it. It praises her faith (Hebrews 11:31). Each level has a short note on what to say.
- The story of how Rahab and her family were saved when Jericho fell is in the walls of Jericho lesson (Joshua 6:22–25).
- Short on time? Do the story, three questions and the memory verse. That is a solid 25-minute lesson.
Frequently asked questions
How long does this Rahab lesson take?
It depends on the age level. The preschool lesson takes 20 to 30 minutes, the kindergarten to 2nd grade lesson about 45 minutes, and the 3rd to 5th grade and preteen lessons 45 to 60 minutes. For a short class, do the story, three questions and the memory verse.
What is the main point of the story of Rahab and the spies?
Trust the LORD. Rahab heard what the LORD had done and believed that "the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath" (Joshua 2:11). She hid the two men Joshua sent, and by faith she "perished not with them that believed not" (Hebrews 11:31). God saved her and all her family (Joshua 6:25).
What was the scarlet line in Rahab's window?
A red cord. The two men told her, "thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by," and bring all her family into her house (Joshua 2:18). Rahab said, "According unto your words, so be it," and she "bound the scarlet line in the window" (2:21).
Did Rahab lie to the king's men, and does the Bible praise it?
She told the king's men that the two men had gone out at dark (Joshua 2:4–5), and that was not true. The Bible never praises those words; God's Word says, "Lying lips are abomination to the LORD" (Proverbs 12:22). What the Bible praises is her faith (Hebrews 11:31). Each lesson has a short teacher note on it.
