What you need

  • The printed template (page 2), one per child (cardstock is sturdiest)
  • Crayons or markers in gray, green, tan, brown and yellow
  • Scissors and a glue stick
  • A 6-inch piece of red yarn per child (Rahab's scarlet line)
  • The printed ram's horn page (page 3), one per child, and tape (harder level)

Steps

  1. Color the wall gray and draw Rahab in the window. Color the ground green, the path tan, the seven rams' horns brown and the ark yellow with brown poles.Color the wall gray and draw Rahab in the window. 2. Cut out the wall, the ground piece and the verse strip on the dashed lines. Help younger children with the cutting.
  3. Fold the wall's tab back on the dotted line. Glue the tab on the back edge of the ground piece, where it says to glue it, so the wall stands up.
  4. Glue one end of the red yarn on the dot under the window so it hangs down the wall. It is Rahab's scarlet line (Joshua 2:18, 2:21).
  5. Glue the verse strip on the back of the wall.
  6. Walk your fingers around the wall once for each of six days, then seven times for the seventh day (Joshua 6:14–15). Shout, and push the wall down flat (6:20). This walls of Jericho craft turns one printed page into the wall of Jericho from Joshua 6. Kids stand a paper wall on the ground, draw Rahab in her window on the wall (Joshua 2:15) and hang a red yarn scarlet line from it (2:21). In front of the wall are the seven rams' horns and the ark (6:4). Then kids go around the wall, shout, and push it down: "the wall fell down flat" (6:20), and the memory verse on its back shows. It costs under 50 cents a child, takes about 20 minutes and comes in three levels, from preschool to 5th grade.

What it looks like finished: easy and medium (first photo) and harder (second photo).

Why this craft works

  • Cheap and simple: one printed page, crayons, scissors, glue and a piece of red yarn.
  • Kids act out the story: they go around the wall once a day for six days and seven times on the seventh day (Joshua 6:14–15), then shout and push the wall down flat.
  • It follows the Bible closely: seven rams' horns before the ark (6:4, 6:8), Rahab's window in the town wall (2:15) and the scarlet line in it (2:21).
  • Kids draw the people: no one is drawn on the template. Kids draw Rahab in the window.
  • It carries the verse home: Joshua 1:9 (KJV), "Be strong and of a good courage," is glued on the back of the wall and shows when it falls.

Three ways to make it

  • Easy (preschool, ages 3–5): you cut out the pieces and glue the wall so it stands. Kids color, draw Rahab and add the red yarn with your help. No scissors.
  • Medium (grades K–2): the craft in the first photo. Kids color and cut out the pieces, fold and glue the wall so it stands, and add the red yarn and the verse.
  • Harder (grades 3–5): the craft in the second photo. Kids also roll a paper ram's horn trumpet from page 3 and glue Hebrews 11:30 on the back of the ground piece.

Questions to ask

While kids work, ask how many trumpets of rams' horns the priests carried (Joshua 6:4), how many times they went around on the seventh day (6:15), what happened when the people shouted (6:20) and what Rahab bound in her window (2:21). Then read Joshua 1:9 together.

Tips for the classroom

For preschoolers, cut out the pieces and glue each wall so it stands ahead of time, so all they do is color, add the yarn and push the wall down. Cardstock makes the wall stand best.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a simple walls of Jericho craft for preschoolers?

Cut out each child's pieces ahead of time and glue the wall's tab on the ground piece for them, so the wall already stands. Preschoolers color, draw Rahab in the window and glue on the red yarn with your help. Then everyone shouts and pushes the wall down flat. It takes about 15 minutes with no cutting by the kids.

How much does this walls of Jericho craft cost?

Under 50 cents a child: one printed page, a 6-inch piece of red yarn and crayons you already have. The template is free to print.

What Bible verse goes with this walls of Jericho craft?

Joshua 1:9 (KJV), "Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest." It is printed on the verse strip glued on the back of the wall, so it shows when the wall falls down flat. The harder level adds Hebrews 11:30.

How can older kids make this Jericho craft harder?

Use the harder level for grades 3–5. Kids also roll a paper ram's horn trumpet from page 3 (Joshua 6:4–5) and glue Hebrews 11:30 on the back of the ground piece. Then they go around the table quietly and toot the horn on the seventh time before the wall falls.
