Jacob's Ladder

These free Jacob's Ladder mazes come in three levels, so every child in your class gets a maze they can finish. Help Jacob find the way to Haran, where he was going!

  • Easy (ages 4–6): one path with no wrong turns.
  • Medium (grades K–2): two or three side paths that lead to dead ends.
  • Hard (grades 3–5): many wrong turns, with side paths branching off other side paths.

Each level downloads on its own, with or without an answer key, and every maze has the King James verse Genesis 28:15.

Talk about it: Jacob went toward Haran and lay down to sleep with stones for his pillows (Genesis 28:10–11). He dreamed of a ladder, "and the top of it reached to heaven" (Genesis 28:12). God said, "I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest" (Genesis 28:15).

The Bible story

Jacob went out from Beer-sheba toward Haran, took of the stones of that place for his pillows, and lay down to sleep. He dreamed of a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven, with the angels of God ascending and descending on it, and the LORD stood above it and said, "I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest." Jacob awaked and said, "Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not." He set up the stone for a pillar, poured oil upon the top of it, and called the place Bethel. Read the whole story in Genesis 28:10–22 (KJV).

Memory verse: "And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of." (Genesis 28:15, KJV). It is printed on every level.

Using the mazes in class

  • Give each child the level they can finish: the easy maze for ages 4–6, medium for kindergarten to 2nd grade, hard for 3rd to 5th grade.
  • Tell the story first, then let kids trace the path with a finger before they use a pencil or crayon.
  • Say the memory verse together when they reach the end, then read the "Talk about it" box on the sheet.

Answer keys

Each level downloads two ways: the puzzle on its own, or with a second page that shows the answer (the path drawn in red). Print the key for helpers, or let kids check their own work.
