Balaam's Donkey

These free Balaam's Donkey mazes come in three levels, so every child in your class gets a maze they can finish. Help Balaam's donkey find the way through the vineyards to the narrow place!

  • Easy (ages 4–6): one path with no wrong turns.
  • Medium (grades K–2): two or three side paths that lead to dead ends.
  • Hard (grades 3–5): many wrong turns, with side paths branching off other side paths.

Each level downloads on its own, with or without an answer key, and every maze has the King James verse Numbers 22:35.

Talk about it: The donkey saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand (Numbers 22:23). Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he bowed down his head (Numbers 22:31). Balaam said, "I have sinned" (Numbers 22:34).

Use them after the Balaam's Donkey Bible story page, with the crossword and word search.

The Bible story

Balaam rose up in the morning, saddled his ass (a donkey) and went with the princes of Moab, and God's anger was kindled because he went. The angel of the LORD stood in the way with his sword drawn, and three times the ass saw the angel and turned aside, and three times Balaam smote her. Then "the LORD opened the mouth of the ass," and she said, "What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?" Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam; he saw the angel, bowed down his head, and said, "I have sinned," and the angel told him to speak "only the word that I shall speak unto thee." Read the whole story in Numbers 22:21–35 (KJV).

Memory verse: "And the angel of the LORD said unto Balaam, Go with the men: but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak." (Numbers 22:35, KJV). It is printed on every level.

Using the mazes in class

  • Give each child the level they can finish: the easy maze for ages 4–6, medium for kindergarten to 2nd grade, hard for 3rd to 5th grade.
  • Tell the story first, then let kids trace the path with a finger before they use a pencil or crayon.
  • Say the memory verse together when they reach the end, then read the "Talk about it" box on the sheet.

Answer keys

Each level downloads two ways: the puzzle on its own, or with a second page that shows the answer (the path drawn in red). Print the key for helpers, or let kids check their own work.
