This free vine and branches Sunday school lesson teaches kids to stay close to Jesus. Jesus said, "I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing" (John 15:5). A branch "cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine" (15:4), and when we bear much fruit, "so shall ye be my disciples" (15:8). It comes in four age levels, each a separate printable teacher lesson, plus one take-home sheet for families. Everything is in the order you teach it.
Choose your age level
- Preschool (ages 3–5), 20–30 minutes, 2 pages: a follow-the-vine game, a short teaching with hand motions and repeat-after-me lines, a plant and a cut leaf to touch, three simple questions, a short memory verse ("I am the vine, ye are the branches") with motions, and a drawing activity.
- Kindergarten to 2nd grade, 45 minutes, 3 pages: the Hold On to the Vine rope game, the teaching in simple words with a plant object lesson, five recall questions with answers, a memory verse vine on paper strips, and a Grow the Branches review game.
- 3rd to 5th grade, 45–60 minutes, 3 pages: a flashlight without batteries, kids look up verses in their own Bibles ("I am the true vine," "abide in me," "without me ye can do nothing"), five thinking questions and three recall questions, and a Bible look-up race.
- Preteens (ages 11–12), 45–60 minutes, 3 pages: students read John 15:1–8 out loud themselves, then look closer at the branch that holds on, the fruitful branch that is purged, the "if" in 15:7 and the fruit of the Spirit. Six discussion questions, an abide plan, and two memory verses (John 15:5 and 15:8).

Tips for teaching I am the vine
- Bring a real plant and a leaf you cut off the day before. Kids see at once that a branch "cannot bear fruit of itself" (John 15:4).
- Explain "abide" as staying close: praying, keeping Jesus' words and obeying Him (15:7).
- The lessons for preschool to 5th grade leave out John 15:6; preteens read it as written.
- Short on time? Do the object lesson, three questions and the memory verse. That is a solid 25-minute lesson.
Frequently asked questions
How long does this vine and branches lesson take?
It depends on the age level. The preschool lesson takes 20 to 30 minutes, the kindergarten to 2nd grade lesson about 45 minutes, and the 3rd to 5th grade and preteen lessons 45 to 60 minutes. For a short class, do the object lesson, three questions and the memory verse.
What does "I am the vine, ye are the branches" mean for kids?
Jesus is the vine and we are the branches. A branch can't grow fruit by itself; it has to stay joined to the vine (John 15:4). When we abide in Jesus, which means we stay close to Him, we bring forth much fruit, "for without me ye can do nothing" (John 15:5).
What does abide mean in John 15?
Abide means to stay, to live in, and to keep on being with. Jesus said, "Abide in me, and I in you" (John 15:4). For kids, it means staying close to Jesus every day: praying, keeping His words and obeying Him (John 15:7).
Do the lessons teach John 15:6?
The preschool to 5th grade lessons stay with John 15:1–5 and 15:7–8 and leave out verse 6, the branch that is cast forth and burned. Preteens read the whole passage, and the lesson keeps the focus where Jesus put it: "Abide in me."
