This free Bread of Life Sunday school lesson teaches kids that Jesus is all we need. The day after He fed the five thousand, the people crossed the sea to find Him because they wanted more bread, and Jesus said: "I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst" (John 6:35). It comes in four age levels, each a separate printable teacher lesson, plus one take-home sheet for families. Pick the one that fits your class. Everything is in the order you teach it.

Choose your age level

  • Preschool (ages 3–5), 20–30 minutes, 2 pages: a short story with hand motions and repeat-after-me lines (row the boats!), a pass-the-loaf game, three simple questions, a shortened memory verse ("I am the bread of life") with a motion, and a drawing activity.
  • Kindergarten to 2nd grade, 45 minutes, 3 pages: the story in simple words, five recall questions with answers, the Slices in a Row verse game with six cards, and a Pass the Loaf review game.
  • 3rd to 5th grade, 45–60 minutes, 4 pages: kids look up verses in their own Bibles during a fuller story (the boats to Capernaum, the meat which perisheth, the work of God, the manna and the true bread from heaven), five thinking questions and three recall questions, and a Bible look-up race.
  • Preteens (ages 11–12), 45–60 minutes, 3 pages: students read John 6:22–35 and 6:66–69 out loud themselves, then discuss why the crowd came, what people labour for, the manna and the true bread, and why Peter stayed. Six discussion questions, a journal page, and two memory verses (John 6:35 and John 6:68).

Lesson at a glance

  • Bible passage: John 6:26–35 (with John 6:22–25 for the setting)
  • Main point: Jesus is the bread of life. He is all we need, so we come to Him and believe on Him.
  • Memory verse: John 6:35 (KJV), with John 6:68 added for preteens
  • Ages: preschool to preteen, in four versions

Lesson outline (the same in every version)

  1. Opening game: a short game about getting hungry again, or things that don't last.
  2. Bible story: the people cross the sea in boats to find Jesus in Capernaum; Jesus tells them not to labour for the meat which perisheth; the work of God is to believe on Him; the manna in the desert and the true bread from heaven; and "I am the bread of life." Every fact has its verse reference so you can check it.
  3. Questions to ask: with answers, at the right level for each age.
  4. Memory verse: a game or motion to help kids learn John 6:35.
  5. What this means for us: coming to Jesus, the gospel (Acts 2:38), and a challenge for the week.
  6. Activity: the Bread of Life word search, a pass-the-loaf game, a drawing, a Bible look-up race or a journal page, depending on the age.
  7. Prayer.

Tips for teaching the Bread of Life

  • Use a paper loaf, not real bread, for the games. It saves money and keeps kids with food allergies safe.
  • Explain "shall never hunger" plainly: our tummies still get hungry, but Jesus gives life that lasts forever (John 6:27).
  • This passage follows the feeding of the five thousand (John 6:1–14). If your class learned that story last week, start by asking what they remember.
  • Short on time? Do the story, three questions and the memory verse. That is a solid 25-minute lesson.

Frequently asked questions

How long does this Bread of Life lesson take?

It depends on the age level. The preschool lesson takes 20 to 30 minutes, the kindergarten to 2nd grade lesson about 45 minutes, and the 3rd to 5th grade and preteen lessons 45 to 60 minutes. For a short class, do the story, three questions and the memory verse.

What does "I am the bread of life" mean for kids?

The day after Jesus fed the five thousand, the people came looking for more bread. Jesus told them not to work for food that spoils, but for the food that lasts to everlasting life, which He gives (John 6:26–27). Then He said, "I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger" (John 6:35). Bread fills us for a little while; Jesus gives life that lasts forever.

Where did Jesus say "I am the bread of life"?

In Capernaum, a town by the sea of Galilee. The people crossed the sea in boats to find Jesus there (John 6:24), and John 6:59 says He taught these things in the synagogue in Capernaum.
