This free Hezekiah Sunday school lesson teaches kids that God hears our prayers. Hezekiah was "sick unto death," and when Isaiah brought the hard news, Hezekiah "turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto the LORD" (2 Kings 20:1–2). God sent Isaiah back to say, "I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee" (20:5), and for a sign the shadow went back ten degrees (20:11). It comes in four age levels, each a separate printable teacher lesson, plus one take-home sheet for families. Everything is in the order you teach it.
Choose your age level
- Preschool (ages 3–5), 20–30 minutes, 2 pages: a whisper game, a short story with hand motions and repeat-after-me lines, three simple questions, a shortened memory verse ("I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears") with motions, and a drawing activity.
- Kindergarten to 2nd grade, 45 minutes, 3 pages: the Forward and Back game, the story in simple words, five recall questions with answers, the Prayer Steps Verse game with six paper strips, and a Shadow Steps game.
- 3rd to 5th grade, 45–60 minutes, 3 pages: an easy-or-impossible game, kids look up verses in their own Bibles during a fuller story (the hard news, the prayer, God's fast answer, the fifteen years and the sign), five thinking questions and three recall questions, and a Bible look-up race.
- Preteens (ages 11–12), 45–60 minutes, 3 pages: students read 2 Kings 20:1–11 out loud themselves, then discuss making prayer the first move, crying out to God, waiting on Him and why God answers. Six discussion questions, a journal page, and two memory verses (2 Kings 20:5 and James 5:16).

- Prayer.
Tips for teaching Hezekiah's prayer
- Read 2 Kings 20:5 straight from your Bible. "I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears" is the heart of the story.
- Some kids have a sick family member, or lost someone who was not healed. Each lesson has a short, gentle answer for that question.
- The Bible doesn't describe what the dial of Ahaz looked like, only that the shadow went back ten degrees on it. The lessons don't add more.
- Short on time? Do the story, three questions and the memory verse. That is a solid 25-minute lesson.
Frequently asked questions
How long does this Hezekiah lesson take?
It depends on the age level. The preschool lesson takes 20 to 30 minutes, the kindergarten to 2nd grade lesson about 45 minutes, and the 3rd to 5th grade and preteen lessons 45 to 60 minutes. For a short class, do the story, three questions and the memory verse.
What is the main point of the story of Hezekiah's prayer?
God hears our prayers. Hezekiah was sick unto death, and he turned his face to the wall, prayed and wept. God sent Isaiah back to tell him, "I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee" (2 Kings 20:5).
What was the sign God gave Hezekiah?
Hezekiah asked for a sign that the LORD would heal him. Isaiah asked if the shadow should go forward ten degrees or back ten degrees. Hezekiah asked for it to go back, and the LORD "brought the shadow ten degrees backward" on the dial of Ahaz (2 Kings 20:8–11). Isaiah 38:8 calls it "the sun dial of Ahaz."
How many years did God add to Hezekiah's life?
Fifteen years. God said, "I will add unto thy days fifteen years" (2 Kings 20:6), and He promised to deliver Hezekiah and the city of Jerusalem from the king of Assyria.
