Twelve short Father's Day prayers written for kids to pray, each on a cut-apart card with a King James verse that goes with it. There is a prayer for a dad, a grandpa, a pastor, a dad who works hard and a dad who is far away, and three that fit every child, including one that thanks God for being our Father.

The 12 prayers

  • For my dad: Dear God, thank You for my dad. Help him be strong and kind. Keep him safe at work and on the road. Help me listen to him and obey. In Jesus' name, amen. (Ephesians 6:1)
  • For someone who cares for me like a dad: Dear God, thank You for the man who cares for me like a dad. Bless him for every ride, every meal and every time he listens. Help me show him I'm thankful. In Jesus' name, amen. (Philippians 1:3)
  • For my grandpa: Dear God, thank You for my grandpa and all he has taught me. Keep him healthy, and help him walk in Your way all his days. In Jesus' name, amen. (Proverbs 16:31)
  • Thank You for being my Father: Dear God, You made me and You love me. When my family is near or far away, You are with me. Thank You for being my Father. In Jesus' name, amen. (Psalm 68:5)
  • For my pastor and teachers: Dear God, thank You for my pastor and my teachers at church who teach me Your Word. Give them strength and joy, and help me walk in the truth. In Jesus' name, amen. (3 John 1:4)
  • For the dads at our church: Dear God, bless every dad and grandpa at our church. Help them lead their homes in Your way, so their children are blessed. In Jesus' name, amen. (Proverbs 20:7)
  • When Dad works hard: Dear God, thank You for the work my dad does for our family. Give him strength, keep him safe, and help him do it all for You. In Jesus' name, amen. (Colossians 3:23)
  • When Dad is far away: Dear God, my dad is far away right now. Please watch over him wherever he goes. Thank You that You are with both of us. In Jesus' name, amen. (Psalm 121:8)
  • Help me honor my dad: Dear God, help me honor my dad with my words and my actions. Help me obey with a happy heart and thank him every day. In Jesus' name, amen. (Exodus 20:12)
  • Bless our home: Dear God, bless our home. Help our family love each other, forgive each other and serve You together. In Jesus' name, amen. (Numbers 6:24)
  • Give my dad wisdom: Dear God, give my dad wisdom for every choice he makes, just as You gave wisdom to King Solomon. Help me be wise too. In Jesus' name, amen. (James 1:5)
  • Thank You for forgiving: Dear God, like the father in Jesus' story who ran to his son, You are ready to forgive. Help me say sorry quickly and forgive quickly too. In Jesus' name, amen. (1 John 1:9)

How to use them

  • In the Father's Day service: ask every dad, grandpa and man who cares for a child to stand, and let a few children read a card aloud over them. The pastor closes in prayer.
  • Tuck one in a card: a child picks the prayer that fits and gives it with a Father's Day verse card.
  • Pray it all week: send a card home and pray it together each night before Father's Day.

Not every child has a dad at home. Say "your dad, or someone who cares for you like a dad," and point every child to cards 2, 4 and 5. God is "A father of the fatherless" (Psalm 68:5), and the last card goes with Jesus' story of the father who ran to his son, our prodigal son story set (memory verse 1 John 1:9). Frequently asked questions

What is a short Father's Day prayer for kids?

"Dear God, thank You for my dad. Help him be strong and kind. Keep him safe at work and on the road. Help me listen to him and obey. In Jesus' name, amen." It is the first card in this set, with Ephesians 6:1.

How can our church pray for fathers on Father's Day?

Ask every dad, grandpa and man who cares for a child to stand. Let a few children read prayer cards aloud, then the pastor closes in prayer, in Jesus' name.

What if a child's dad isn't part of their life?

Cards 2, 4 and 5 work for anyone: a prayer for someone who cares for them like a dad, a prayer thanking God for being our Father (Psalm 68:5: "A father of the fatherless"), and a prayer for their pastor and teachers.
