Scripture
Mark 7:24–30

What you need

  • The printed template (page 2), one per child (cardstock is sturdiest)
  • Crayons or markers in tan and brown, plus any colors for the drawing
  • Scissors and a glue stick
  • The printed table strip (page 3), one per child, plus a pencil (harder level)

Steps

  1. Color the house tan and the bed brown. Color the door brown on both sides.Color the house tan and the bed brown. Color the door brown on both sides.
  2. In the oval window above the bed, draw the woman's young daughter lying on the bed, resting, with long hair and a long dress.
  3. Cut out the house, the door and the verse strip on the dashed lines.
  4. Glue the door: put glue only on the dotted strip beside the doorway. Press the left edge of the door on it, so the door covers the doorway and opens like a real door.
  5. Turn the house over and glue the verse strip on the back. Read it together.
  6. Tell it: the woman fell at Jesus' feet and besought Him to cast the devil out of her daughter (Mark 7:25–26). Jesus said, "For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter" (7:29). This Syrophoenician woman craft turns one printed page into a paper house with a door that opens. A woman who was not from Israel fell at Jesus' feet and besought Him to cast the devil out of her young daughter (Mark 7:25–26). She answered humbly, "Yes, Lord," and Jesus said, "For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter" (7:28–29). Kids open the door to show what she found at home: "her daughter laid upon the bed" (7:30). The memory verse, Mark 7:29, is glued on the back. It costs under 50 cents a child.

Why this craft works

  • Cheap and simple: one printed page, two crayon colors plus any colors for the drawing, scissors and a glue stick.
  • Kids act out the story: they open the door just as the mother came home and found her daughter laid upon the bed (Mark 7:30).
  • It remembers her answer: older kids add a table with the bread and the crumbs (7:28), and write "Yes, Lord" and a prayer need on the back.
  • No one is drawn on the template, and never Jesus: kids draw only the daughter resting on the bed.
  • It carries the verse home: Mark 7:29 (KJV), the memory verse for the whole set, is glued on the back of the house.

Three ways to make it

  • Easy (preschool, ages 3–5): you cut out the pieces and glue on the door and the verse strip. Kids color, draw the girl with your help and open the door. No scissors.
  • Medium (grades K–2): the craft in the first photo. Kids color, draw, cut out the pieces, glue the door and tell the story with it.
  • Harder (grades 3–5): the craft in the second photo. Kids also make the table strip from page 3, with "Yes, Lord" and a prayer need on the back.

Questions to ask

While kids work, ask where Jesus went (Mark 7:24), who needed help (7:25), what the woman did at Jesus' feet (7:25–26), what she said about the crumbs (7:28), what Jesus told her (7:29) and what she found at home (7:30). Then read Mark 7:29 together.

Tips for the classroom

For preschoolers, cut out the pieces and glue the doors ahead of time, so all they do is color, draw and open the door. Keep it gentle: nothing about the unclean spirit is drawn. Cardstock makes the door last longest.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a simple Syrophoenician woman craft for preschoolers?

Cut out each child's house, door and verse strip ahead of time, glue the door beside the doorway and the verse strip on the back. Preschoolers color the house, the bed and the door, draw the little girl on the bed with your help, and open the door to show she was well. About 15 minutes, no cutting by the kids.

How much does this Syrophoenician woman craft cost?

Under 50 cents a child: one printed page, a little glue and crayons you already have. The template is free to print. The harder level adds a second page.

What Bible verse goes with this craft?

Mark 7:29 (KJV), "And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter." It is the memory verse for the whole set, and it is printed on the verse strip that kids glue on the back of the house.

How can older kids make this craft harder?

Use the harder level for grades 3–5. Kids also make the table strip from page 3, a table with the children's bread on it and crumbs under it, for the woman's answer in Mark 7:28. On the back they write "Yes, Lord" and one thing they will keep asking Jesus for.
