What you need

  • The printed template (page 2), one per child (cardstock is sturdiest)
  • Crayons or markers, including light brown and blue
  • Scissors, a glue stick and clear tape
  • The printed story strip page (page 3), one per child, plus a red crayon and a pencil (harder level)

Steps

  1. Color: in each of the four crowd windows on the press, draw one person in the crowd (draw every woman with long hair and a long dress). Color the road light brown and the garment blue. In the woman's window, draw the woman with long hair and a long dress.Color: in each of the four crowd windows on the press, draw one person in the crowd (draw every woman with long hair and a long dress). 2. Cut out the press, the slider band, the woman and the verse strip on the dashed lines.
  3. Turn the press over and glue the verse strip on the back. Read it together.
  4. Wrap the slider band around the left end of the press, with the ends on the back. Tape the ends together so the band is a little loose and slides.
  5. Glue the woman on the front of the slider band.
  6. Tell it: she came in the press behind Jesus and touched His garment (Mark 5:27). This craft about the woman who touched Jesus' garment turns one printed page into a paper crowd that kids can slide through. The woman had been sick twelve years. She "came in the press behind, and touched his garment," because she said, "If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole" (Mark 5:27–28). Kids slide her along the press until she touches the blue garment. The memory verse, Mark 5:34, is glued on the back. It costs under 50 cents a child.

What it looks like finished: easy and medium (first photo) and harder (second photo).

Why this craft works

  • Cheap and simple: one printed page, crayons, scissors, a glue stick and a little tape.
  • Kids act out the story: the woman slides through the crowd and touches the garment, just as Mark 5:27 says.
  • It goes deeper for older kids: a folding story strip retells it in order, from twelve years sick to "go in peace" (5:25–34), with a prayer name on the back.
  • No people printed, and never Jesus: the template shows only windows, a road and Jesus' garment. Kids draw the crowd and the woman in the windows.
  • It carries the verse home: Mark 5:34 (KJV), the memory verse for the whole set, is glued on the back of the press.

Three ways to make it

  • Easy (preschool, ages 3–5): you cut out the pieces, glue the verse and tape the band. Kids draw, color and slide the woman to the garment. No scissors.
  • Medium (grades K–2): the craft in the first photo. Kids draw, color, cut out the pieces, tape the band and tell the story.
  • Harder (grades 3–5): the craft in the second photo. Kids also make a folding story strip from page 3 and retell the story one picture at a time.

Questions to ask

While kids work, ask how long the woman had been sick (Mark 5:25), who could not help her (5:26), where she came in the crowd (5:27), what she said (5:28), what Jesus asked (5:30) and what He called her (5:34). Then read Mark 5:34 together.

Tips for the classroom

For preschoolers, cut out the pieces and tape the bands ahead of time, so all they do is draw, color and slide. If a band won't slide, retape it a little looser. Cardstock makes the press last longest.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a simple craft about the woman who touched Jesus' garment for preschoolers?

Cut out each child's pieces ahead of time, glue the verse strip on the back, tape the slider band around the press and glue on the woman. Preschoolers draw and color, then slide the woman through the crowd to the garment. About 15 minutes, no cutting by the kids.

How much does this craft cost?

Under 50 cents a child: one printed page, a little glue and tape, and crayons you already have. The template is free to print. The harder level adds a second page.

What Bible verse goes with this craft?

Mark 5:34 (KJV), "And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague." It is the memory verse for the whole set, and it is printed on the verse strip that kids glue on the back of the press.

How can older kids make this craft harder?

Use the harder level for grades 3–5. Kids also make a folding story strip from page 3 with four pictures: twelve marks for twelve years (Mark 5:25), an empty purse (5:26), the garment (5:27) and a heart for "made thee whole" (5:34). They retell the story in order and write on the back who they will pray for.
