- Ages
- Preschool (3–5), Early Elementary (K–2), Upper Elementary (3–5)
- Time
- 15 to 30 minutes
- Scripture
- Luke 1:26–38
- Bible story
- Gabriel Visits Mary
What you need
- The printed template (page 2), one per child (cardstock is sturdiest)
- Crayons or markers in light blue, yellow, brown, green and red, and any colors for drawing Mary
- Scissors and a glue stick
- A piece of yarn about 24 inches long per child
- The printed window shutters page (page 3), one per child (harder level)
Steps
- Color the flags. Flag 1 (Nazareth): the flag light blue, the house brown and the hill green. Flag 2 (Mary): the flag yellow, but leave the oval window white. Flag 3 (the King): the flag light blue and the crown yellow. Flag 4 (Mary's yes): the flag yellow and the heart red.

- In the window on flag 2, draw Mary listening to God's message, with long hair and a long dress.
- Cut out the four flags and the verse card on the dashed lines. Help younger children with the cutting.
- Fold the top tab of each flag back on the dotted line.
- Lay the yarn straight across the table. Glue the flags on in order, 1 to 4 from left to right, about a finger-width apart: put glue on the tab, fold it over the yarn and press it onto the back of the flag. Tell each part of the story as its flag goes on.
- Glue the verse card on the back of flag 2 and read it together. Hang the banner up.

This angel Gabriel visits Mary craft turns one printed page and a piece of yarn into a story banner. God sent the angel Gabriel "unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth" (Luke 1:26), to Mary, and told her that she would "bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS" (1:31). Mary answered, "be it unto me according to thy word" (1:38). Kids color four flags (Nazareth, Mary in her window, the crown of a kingdom with no end, and a heart for Mary's yes), draw Mary in the window, and hang the flags on yarn in story order. The memory verse, Luke 1:31, goes on the back. It costs under 50 cents a child, takes about 20 minutes and comes in three levels, from preschool to 5th grade.

What it looks like finished: easy and medium (first photo) and harder (second photo).
Why this craft works
- Cheap and simple: one printed page, a piece of yarn and crayons.
- It tells the story in order: each flag is one part of Luke 1:26–38, so kids can retell it by pointing to the flags at home.
- Every child draws Mary: kids draw her in the window on flag 2, listening to God's message. The harder level's shutters open at "the angel came in unto her" (1:28).
- It carries the verse home: the template includes Luke 1:31 (KJV) on a card to glue on the back.
Three ways to make it
- Easy (preschool, ages 3–5): you cut out the pieces and fold the tabs. Kids color, draw Mary and glue the flags onto the yarn with your help. No scissors.
- Medium (grades K–2): the craft in the first photo. Kids color, draw Mary, cut out the pieces and glue the flags onto the yarn.
- Harder (grades 3–5): kids add two window shutters from page 3 to the Mary flag and use them to retell the story (Luke 1:28).
Questions to ask
While kids work, ask who God sent and where (Luke 1:26), who Mary was espoused to (1:27), what the angel said so she would not be afraid (1:30), what name God gave the baby (1:31), what the angel said about His kingdom (1:33), what is impossible with God (1:37) and what Mary answered (1:38). Then read Luke 1:31 together.
Tips for the classroom
For preschoolers, cut out the pieces ahead of time and say the flag order together: Nazareth, Mary, the King, Mary's yes. Tell the virgin birth simply and reverently: God did it by His own power (Luke 1:35).

Frequently asked questions
How do you make a simple angel Gabriel visits Mary craft for preschoolers?
Cut out each child's four flags and verse card ahead of time and fold the tabs. Preschoolers color the flags and draw Mary in the window. Then they help glue the flags onto a piece of yarn in order while you tell the story. It takes about 15 minutes with no cutting by the kids.
How much does this angel Gabriel and Mary craft cost?
Under 50 cents a child: one printed page, a piece of yarn and crayons you already have. The template is free to print.
What Bible verse goes with this angel Gabriel visits Mary craft?
Luke 1:31 (KJV), "And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS." It is printed on the verse card that kids glue on the back of the Mary flag.
How can older kids make this craft harder?
Use the harder level for grades 3–5. Kids add two window shutters from page 3 to the Mary flag. They tell the story with the shutters closed, then open them at "the angel came in unto her" (Luke 1:28) to show Mary listening.
