- Ages
- Preschool (3–5), Early Elementary (K–2), Upper Elementary (3–5)
- Time
- 15 to 30 minutes
- Scripture
- Genesis 29:1–30
- Bible story
- Jacob, Rachel and Leah
What you need
- The printed template (page 2), one per child (cardstock is sturdiest)
- One brass paper fastener (brad) per child
- Crayons or markers in light blue, yellow, green, light brown, blue and gray, plus any colors for drawing the people
- Scissors and a glue stick
- A sharp pencil for poking the brad holes (for the teacher)
- The printed harder page (page 3), one per child (harder level)
Steps
- Color the card: the sky light blue, the sun yellow, the field green, the well wall light brown and the water blue. Leave the sheep and the two drawing windows white.

- In the left window, draw Jacob. In the right window, draw Rachel, who kept her father's sheep (Genesis 29:9).
- Color the stone gray.
- Cut out the card, the stone and the verse strip on the dashed lines. Don't cut out the windows, and don't cut the two short dotted lines on the right (they are for the harder level).
- A grown-up pokes a small hole through the dot on the well's rim and through the dot on the stone.
- Lay the stone over the well's mouth with the two dots together. Push the brad through both holes from the front and open its legs flat on the back.
- Glue the verse strip on the back of the card, beside the brad legs. Read it together.
- Tell it: a great stone was upon the well's mouth (Genesis 29:2). Rachel came with her father's sheep (29:9). Turn the stone up and off the well: Jacob rolled the stone from the well's mouth and watered the flock (29:10).

This Jacob, Rachel and Leah craft puts the well from Genesis 29 in kids' hands. "A great stone was upon the well's mouth" (Genesis 29:2), and when Rachel came with her father's sheep, Jacob "rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the flock" (29:9–10). Kids turn the paper stone off the well on a brad, with three little flocks lying by it. The memory verse, Genesis 29:20, goes on the back.

What it looks like finished: easy and medium (first photo) and harder (second photo).
Why this craft works
- Cheap and simple: one printed page, one brass paper fastener, a glue stick, crayons and scissors.
- Kids do what Jacob did: they turn the stone off the well's mouth themselves (Genesis 29:10).
- It teaches the big idea: love serves. Jacob helped right away, and then "served seven years for Rachel" (29:20). The harder level adds Rachel's flock walking up to the well.
- No one is drawn for them: kids draw Jacob and Rachel in the windows.
- It carries the verse home: Genesis 29:20 (KJV), the memory verse for the whole set, is glued on the back of the card.
Three ways to make it
- Easy (preschool, ages 3–5): you cut out the pieces and fasten the stone. Kids color, draw and turn the stone. No scissors.
- Medium (grades K–2): the craft in the first photo. Kids color, draw, cut out the pieces and fasten the stone with a brad.
- Harder (grades 3–5): the craft in the second photo. Kids add a strip of four sheep that slides through two slits, so Rachel's flock walks up to the well (Genesis 29:9).
Questions to ask
While kids work, ask where the great stone was (Genesis 29:2), how many flocks lay by the well (29:2), who came with her father's sheep (29:9), what Jacob did (29:10) and how long seven years seemed to him (29:20). Then read Genesis 29:20 together.
Tips for the classroom
For preschoolers, cut out the pieces and fasten the stones ahead of time, so all they do is color, draw and turn the stone. Brads are small, so keep them away from little ones. Cardstock makes the stone turn smoothly.

Frequently asked questions
How do you make a simple Jacob, Rachel and Leah craft for preschoolers?
Cut out each child's card, stone and verse strip ahead of time, and fasten the stone on the well with the brad yourself. Preschoolers color the card, draw Jacob and Rachel in the windows, and turn the stone off the well as you tell the story. It takes about 15 minutes with no cutting by the kids.
How much does this Jacob, Rachel and Leah craft cost?
Under 50 cents a child: one printed page, one brass paper fastener, a glue stick and crayons you already have. The template is free to print. The harder level adds a second page.
What Bible verse goes with this craft?
Genesis 29:20 (KJV), "And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her." It is the memory verse for the whole Jacob, Rachel and Leah set, and it is printed on the verse strip that kids glue on the back of the card.
How can older kids make this craft harder?
Use the harder level for grades 3–5. Kids add a green strip of four sheep from page 3 that slides through two slits in the card, so Rachel's flock walks up to the well: "Rachel came with her father's sheep: for she kept them" (Genesis 29:9).
