- Ages
- Preschool (3–5), Early Elementary (K–2), Upper Elementary (3–5)
- Time
- 15 to 30 minutes
- Scripture
- Genesis 41:1–40
- Bible story
- Pharaoh's Dream
What you need
- The printed template (page 2), one per child (cardstock is sturdiest)
- Crayons or markers in yellow, green, brown and gray
- Scissors and a glue stick
- The printed river card and lean kine panel (page 3), one per child, plus a blue crayon (harder level)
Steps
- Color the grain card: the seven full ears yellow, the stalk and leaves green and the ground brown. Color the thin ears panel: the seven thin ears gray and the ground brown.

- Cut out the grain card, the thin ears panel and the verse strip on the dashed lines.
- Fold the panel's tab back on its fold line (dashes and dots).
- Glue the tab on the dotted box in the middle of the grain card, so the panel lies open on the right half of the card.
- Glue the verse strip on the back of the grain card. Read it together.
- Count the seven full ears and the seven thin ears. Then fold the thin ears over the full ears: "the seven thin ears devoured the seven rank and full ears" (Genesis 41:7).

This Pharaoh's dream craft turns one printed page into Pharaoh's second dream. "Seven ears of corn came up upon one stalk, rank and good," then seven thin ears "blasted with the east wind" sprang up and "devoured the seven rank and full ears" (Genesis 41:5–7). Kids color the full ears and the thin ears, count seven of each, and fold the thin ears over the full ears. Joseph told Pharaoh, "It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace" (41:16). It comes in three levels, with the template and teacher notes in one free PDF.

What it looks like finished: easy and medium (first photo) and harder (second photo).
Why this craft works
- Cheap and simple: one printed page, a glue stick, crayons and scissors.
- The thin ears really eat up the full ears: kids fold the panel over, and the seven full ears are gone (Genesis 41:7).
- Kids count to seven: seven full ears and seven thin ears, the seven years of plenty and the seven years of famine (41:26–30).
- It teaches the main point: God gives wisdom. Only God knew what the dream meant (41:16, 41:25).
- It carries the verse home: Genesis 41:16 (KJV) is glued on the back of the card.
Three ways to make it
- Easy (preschool, ages 3–5): you cut out and glue the pieces. Kids color, count and fold. No scissors.
- Medium (grades K–2): the craft in the first photo. Kids color, cut out, fold and glue the card themselves.
- Harder (grades 3–5): the craft in the second photo. Kids also make Pharaoh's first dream from page 3, seven lean kine that fold over seven fat kine (41:2–4), and glue the grain card under it, because "the dream of Pharaoh is one" (41:25).
Questions to ask
While kids work, ask how many ears came up upon one stalk (Genesis 41:5), what the thin ears did (41:7), who could not interpret the dream (41:8), what Joseph said (41:16) and what the full and thin ears meant (41:26–30). Then read Genesis 41:16 together.
Tips for the classroom
Show kids how to fold the tab back before they glue: only the tab gets glue, or the panel won't fold over. For preschoolers, cut out and glue the cards ahead of time, so all they do is color, count and fold. Cardstock keeps the card stiff.

Frequently asked questions
How do you make a simple Pharaoh's dream craft for preschoolers?
Cut out each child's grain card, thin ears panel and verse strip ahead of time, and glue the panel and the strip on. Preschoolers color the full ears yellow and the thin ears gray, count to seven on each side, and fold the thin ears over the full ears. About 15 minutes, no cutting by the kids.
How much does this Pharaoh's dream craft cost?
Under 50 cents a child: one printed page, a little glue, and crayons you already have. The template is free to print. The harder level adds a second page.
What Bible verse goes with this craft?
Genesis 41:16 (KJV), "And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace." It is printed on the verse strip that kids glue on the back of the grain card.
How can older kids make this craft harder?
Use the harder level for grades 3–5. Kids also make Pharaoh's first dream from page 3: a river card with seven fat kine in a meadow and a lean kine panel with seven lean kine that folds over them (Genesis 41:2–4). The grain card is glued under it, because "the dream of Pharaoh is one" (41:25).
