The story in a nutshell

King Saul took three thousand chosen men to seek David in the wilderness of En-gedi, and Saul went into a cave where David and his men were in the sides of the cave. David's men said this was his day, but David only "cut off the skirt of Saul's robe privily," and even then "David's heart smote him."
