This free golden calf lesson for kids teaches that only God is God and He wants first place in our hearts, from Exodus 32, where the people saw that Moses delayed to come down and made a molten calf, and Moses prayed for them. It comes in four age levels, each a separate printable teacher lesson, plus one take-home sheet for families. Pick the one that fits your class. Everything is in the order you teach it.

Choose your age level

  • Preschool (ages 3–5), 20–30 minutes, 2 pages: a waiting game, a short story with hand motions and repeat-after-me lines, three simple questions, the memory verse with a one-finger motion, and a drawing of the two stone tables.
  • Kindergarten to 2nd grade, 45 minutes, 3 pages: the Forty Count game, the story in simple words, five recall questions with answers, the One God Strips memory verse game, and a Verse Hop game.
  • 3rd to 5th grade, 45–60 minutes, 4 pages: a First Place opening game, kids look up verses in their own Bibles during a fuller story (the forty days, "These be thy gods, O Israel", Moses' prayer, the broken tables, Aaron's excuse), five thinking questions and three recall questions, and a Bible look-up race.
  • Preteens (ages 11–12), 45–60 minutes, 4 pages: students read Exodus 32 out loud themselves, then discuss wanting a god we can see, drifting from God, excuses and praying for others. Six discussion questions, a journal page, and two memory verses (Exodus 20:3 and Matthew 4:10).

  5. What this means for us: give God first place, the gospel (Acts 2:38), and a challenge for the week.
  6. Activity: the golden calf word search, crossword, maze, worksheet, the golden calf craft, a Bible look-up race or a journal page, depending on the age.
  7. Prayer.

Tips for teaching the golden calf

  • Read Exodus 32:14 straight from your Bible. Moses prayed, and God showed mercy. That is the turning point of the story.
  • Point out what the people said about the calf, "These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt" (Exodus 32:4), and then read Exodus 20:2. It was the LORD who brought them out.
  • The feast in Exodus 32:6 is told only as offerings, eating and drinking. The 3rd to 5th grade and preteen lessons have a short teacher note on Exodus 32:25–29 and 32:35 in case a child asks; the younger lessons leave those verses out.
  • Short on time? Do the story, three questions and the memory verse. That is a solid 25-minute lesson.

Frequently asked questions

How long does this golden calf lesson take?

It depends on the age level. The preschool lesson takes 20 to 30 minutes, the kindergarten to 2nd grade lesson about 45 minutes, and the 3rd to 5th grade and preteen lessons 45 to 60 minutes. For a short class, do the story, three questions and the memory verse.

What is the main point of the golden calf story for kids?

Worship God only. God said, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" (Exodus 20:3). When Moses delayed to come down, the people made a molten calf of gold, but Moses prayed for them, and God showed mercy (Exodus 32:1–14).

Why did the Israelites make a golden calf?

Moses was on the mount with God forty days and forty nights (Exodus 24:18). When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down, they said to Aaron, "Up, make us gods, which shall go before us" (Exodus 32:1). Aaron made a calf from their golden earrings (32:2–4).

How do I teach the hard parts of Exodus 32 to young kids?

Keep to what the lessons tell: the calf, Moses' prayer, the broken tables and the calf ground to powder (Exodus 32:1–20). The preschool and kindergarten to 2nd grade lessons leave out the rest of the chapter. The older lessons have a short teacher note on Exodus 32:25–29 in case a child asks.
