Choose your age level

  • Preschool (ages 3–5), 20–30 minutes, 2 pages: a short story with hand motions and repeat-after-me lines, a find-the-lunch game with 5 paper loaves and 2 paper fish, three simple questions, a shortened memory verse ("But my God shall supply all your need") with a motion, and a draw-the-basket activity.
  • Kindergarten to 2nd grade, 45 minutes, 3 pages: the story in simple words, five recall questions with answers, the Loaves and Fish memory verse game, and the Twelve Baskets hunt.
  • 3rd to 5th grade, 45–60 minutes, 3 pages: kids look up verses in their own Bibles during a fuller story that brings in details from Matthew, Mark and Luke, five thinking questions and three recall questions, and a four Gospels look-up race.
  • Preteens (ages 11–12), 45–60 minutes, 3 pages: students read John 6:1–14 and John 6:26–35 out loud themselves, then discuss giving what seems small, thanking God ahead of time, and Jesus as the bread of life. Six discussion questions, a journal page, and two memory verses (Philippians 4:19 and John 6:35).

Lesson outline (the same in every version)

  1. Opening game: a short game about a small lunch or giving what you have, like "Pass the Basket."
  2. Bible story: the crowd follows Jesus, Jesus tests Philip, Andrew finds a boy with five barley loaves and two small fish, Jesus gives thanks, everyone eats, and twelve baskets are left over. Every fact has its verse reference so you can check it.
  3. Questions to ask: with answers, at the right level for each age.
  4. Memory verse: a game or motion to help kids learn Philippians 4:19.
  5. What this means for us: give Jesus what you have, the gospel (Acts 2:38), and a challenge for the week.
  6. Activity: the Jesus Feeds the 5,000 word search, a coloring page or craft, a Bible look-up race or a journal page, depending on the age.
  7. Prayer.

Tips for teaching Jesus feeds the 5,000

  • Read John 6:9 straight from your Bible. Andrew's question, "what are they among so many?", is the question kids ask about their own small gifts.
  • John is the only Gospel that mentions the boy, Philip, Andrew and the barley loaves. Matthew, Mark and Luke agree on the five loaves, two fish, about five thousand men and twelve baskets.
  • The Bible doesn't tell us what the boy said or felt, so the lesson doesn't add it. It simply says Jesus took the loaves (John 6:11).
  • Short on time? Do the story, three questions and the memory verse. That is a solid 25-minute lesson.

Frequently asked questions

How long does this Jesus Feeds the 5,000 lesson take?

It depends on the age level. The preschool lesson takes 20 to 30 minutes, the kindergarten to 2nd grade lesson about 45 minutes, and the 3rd to 5th grade and preteen lessons 45 to 60 minutes. For a short class, do the story, three questions and the memory verse.

What age is this lesson for?

All ages from preschool to preteen. The lesson comes in four separate teacher PDFs: preschool (ages 3 to 5), kindergarten to 2nd grade, 3rd to 5th grade, and preteens (ages 11 to 12). Each one tells the same Bible story at the right length and reading level, with its own questions and activity.

What is the main point of Jesus feeding the 5,000 for kids?

Jesus can do great things with what we give Him, and He takes care of our needs. He took five small loaves and two fish, gave thanks, and fed a huge crowd with twelve baskets left over (John 6:11–13).

How many people did Jesus feed with five loaves and two fish?

About five thousand men sat down to eat (John 6:10). Matthew adds that this count was "beside women and children" (Matthew 14:21), so the crowd was even bigger.

Who had the five loaves and two fish?

A boy in the crowd. Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, told Jesus, "There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes" (John 6:8–9). The Bible does not give the boy's name.

Is this Sunday school lesson really free?
