This free Creation Sunday school lesson teaches kids that God made everything, and everything He made is good, including them. It comes in four age levels, each a separate printable teacher lesson, plus one take-home sheet for families. Pick the one that fits your class. Everything is in the order you teach it.

Choose your age level

  • Preschool (ages 3–5), 20–30 minutes, 2 pages: a short story with hand motions and repeat-after-me lines, a hunt for things God made, three simple questions, a shortened memory verse ("In the beginning God created") with motions, and a drawing activity.
  • Kindergarten to 2nd grade, 45 minutes, 3 pages: the seven days in simple words, five recall questions with answers, the Seven Plates memory verse game, and the Day Scramble game.
  • 3rd to 5th grade, 45–60 minutes, 3 pages: kids look up verses in their own Bibles during a fuller story (the firmament, "after his kind," the greater and lesser lights, dominion), fill in a seven-day chart, five thinking questions and three recall questions, and a Bible look-up race.
  • Preteens (ages 11–12), 45–60 minutes, 3 pages: students read Genesis 1:1–2:3 out loud themselves, with every old word explained, then discuss starting with God, being made in His image, caring for creation and rest. Six discussion questions, a journal page, and two memory verses (Genesis 1:1 and Hebrews 11:3).

Lesson at a glance

Lesson outline (the same in every version)

  1. Opening game: a short game that shows only God can make something just by speaking, like "Can You Make It?"
  2. Bible story: the seven days in order, from "Let there be light" to people made in God's image and God resting on day seven. Every fact has its verse reference so you can check it.
  3. Questions to ask: with answers, at the right level for each age.
  4. Memory verse: a game or motion to help kids learn Genesis 1:1.
  5. What this means for us: God made you and loves you, the gospel (Acts 2:38), and a challenge for the week.
  6. Activity: the Creation word search, a coloring page, the Day Scramble game, a Bible look-up race or a journal page, depending on the age.
  7. Prayer.

Tips for teaching Creation

  • Read Genesis 1:1 and 1:31 straight from your Bible. They open and close the story: God made everything, and it was very good.
  • Let kids say "And God saw that it was good" with you each time it comes up. It builds the rhythm of Genesis 1.
  • The lesson teaches the days just as Genesis gives them and stays out of debates about how long ago or how long they took.
  • If a child asks "Who made God?", each lesson gives you a short, simple answer from Scripture.
  • Short on time? Do the story, three questions and the memory verse. That is a solid 25-minute lesson.

Frequently asked questions

How long does this Creation lesson take?

It depends on the age level. The preschool lesson takes 20 to 30 minutes, the kindergarten to 2nd grade lesson about 45 minutes, and the 3rd to 5th grade and preteen lessons 45 to 60 minutes. For a short class, do the story, three questions and the memory verse.

What age is this lesson for?

All ages from preschool to preteen. The lesson comes in four separate teacher PDFs: preschool (ages 3 to 5), kindergarten to 2nd grade, 3rd to 5th grade, and preteens (ages 11 to 12). Each one tells the same Bible story at the right length and reading level, with its own questions and activity.

What did God make on each day of creation?

Day 1 light, day and night; day 2 the sky (the Bible calls it the firmament, Heaven); day 3 dry land, seas and plants; day 4 the sun, moon and stars; day 5 sea creatures and birds; day 6 land animals and people. On day 7 God rested (Genesis 1:3–2:3).

What is the main point of the creation story for kids?

God made everything, and everything He made is good. He made people in His own image, which makes every person special to Him (Genesis 1:27, 1:31).

Why did God rest on the seventh day?

His work was finished (Genesis 2:1–2). God was not tired, because He never gets weary (Isaiah 40:28). He blessed the seventh day and made it holy (Genesis 2:3).

Is this Sunday school lesson really free?

Yes. Print as many copies as you need for your church, school or home. Please don't resell it.
