This free Sunday school lesson about the woman who touched Jesus' garment teaches kids to have faith in Jesus. She had been sick twelve years, and no doctor could help her, but she said, "If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole" (Mark 5:28). Jesus told her, "Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace" (5:34). It comes in four age levels, each a separate printable teacher lesson, plus one take-home sheet for families. Everything is in the order you teach it.

Choose your age level

  • Preschool (ages 3–5), 20–30 minutes, 2 pages: a Gentle Touch game, a short story with hand motions and repeat-after-me lines, three simple questions, a shortened memory verse ("Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole") with a motion, and a drawing activity.
  • Kindergarten to 2nd grade, 45 minutes, 3 pages: a Who Touched Me? game, the story in simple words, five recall questions with answers, the Touch the Garment memory verse game, and Make It Whole.
  • 3rd to 5th grade, 45–60 minutes, 3 pages: a Through the Crowd game, kids look up verses in their own Bibles during a fuller story (twelve years, many physicians, "Who touched my clothes?", all the truth), five thinking questions and three recall questions, and a Bible look-up race.
  • Preteens (ages 11–12), 45–60 minutes, 3 pages: students read Mark 5:21–34 out loud themselves, then discuss hope after a long wait, being near Jesus versus reaching out to Him, telling Him all the truth, and what faith looks like. Six discussion questions, a journal page, and two memory verses (Mark 5:34 and Hebrews 11:6).

Tips for teaching this story

  • Let kids hear Mark 5:28 read straight from the Bible. It shows her faith in her own words: "If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole."
  • Count the twelve years together with the younger kids. It helps them feel how long she waited.
  • The Bible calls her sickness "an issue of blood" (Mark 5:25). The younger lessons just say she was very sick; each level has a short note if a child asks.
  • The story sits inside the story of Jairus' daughter (Mark 5:21–43). Each lesson points to the rest of it for next time.
  • Short on time? Do the story, three questions and the memory verse. That is a solid 25-minute lesson.

Frequently asked questions

How long does this lesson about the woman who touched Jesus' garment take?

It depends on the age level. The preschool lesson takes 20 to 30 minutes, the kindergarten to 2nd grade lesson about 45 minutes, and the 3rd to 5th grade and preteen lessons 45 to 60 minutes. For a short class, do the story, three questions and the memory verse.

What is the main point of this story for kids?

Have faith in Jesus. The woman had been sick twelve years and no one could help her, but she said, "If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole" (Mark 5:28). Jesus told her, "Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace" (5:34).

How do you explain the woman's sickness to young children?

Keep it simple: she was very sick for twelve years, and the doctors could not make her better (Mark 5:25–26). The Bible calls it "an issue of blood," a sickness where she kept bleeding. Older kids can read the verses as written; each level has a short note for the teacher.

Is this the same story as Jairus' daughter?

It happens in the middle of it. Jesus was on His way to heal the daughter of Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, when the woman touched His garment (Mark 5:22–24). The rest of Jairus' story is in Mark 5:35–43.
