What you need

  • The printed template (page 2), one per child (cardstock is sturdiest)
  • Crayons or markers in brown, light brown and blue, plus any colors for drawing Priscilla, Aquila and Paul
  • Scissors, a hole punch and a glue stick
  • A 24-inch piece of red yarn and a little tape for each child
  • The printed harder page (page 3), one per child, plus purple and light yellow crayons and a pencil (harder level)

Steps

  1. Color the roof brown. Color the wall light brown and the door blue.Color the roof brown. Color the wall light brown and the door blue.
  2. In the window in the door, draw Priscilla, Aquila and Paul working together as tentmakers (Acts 18:3).
  3. Cut out the roof, the wall and the verse strip on the dashed lines.
  4. Punch a hole on each of the 8 circles on the roof and the 8 circles on the wall.
  5. Lay the roof over the top of the wall, so the roof's bottom edge sits on the wall's dotted line and the 8 holes line up.
  6. Wrap tape around one end of the yarn to make a needle. Tape the other end to the back of the wall by the first hole.
  7. Sew the roof to the wall: each roof hole sits on a wall hole. Push the needle up from the back through the first hole, down through the second, up through the third, and keep going in and out to the eighth hole. Tape the end on the back.
  8. Glue the verse strip on the back of the wall. Read it together.
  9. Tell it: Paul came to Corinth and found Aquila and his wife Priscilla. He was of the same craft, so he abode with them and wrought, "for by their occupation they were tentmakers" (Acts 18:2–3).Tell it: Paul came to Corinth and found Aquila and his wife Priscilla. He was of the same craft, so he abode with them and wrought, "for by their occupation they were tentmakers" (Acts 18:2–3).

This Priscilla and Aquila craft has kids sew a paper tent together with yarn. Paul came to Corinth and found Aquila and his wife Priscilla, and "because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers" (Acts 18:3). Kids punch the holes, sew the roof onto the wall, and draw Priscilla, Aquila and Paul working together in the door.

Why this craft works

  • Cheap and simple: one printed page, a piece of yarn, tape, a glue stick, crayons and a hole punch.
  • Kids work like tentmakers: sewing the tent's roof onto its wall shows the occupation that Paul, Aquila and Priscilla shared (Acts 18:3).
  • It shows serving God together: Priscilla and Aquila worked together, and together they helped Apollos learn the way of God more perfectly (18:26).
  • It carries the verse home: Acts 18:26 (KJV), the memory verse for the whole Priscilla and Aquila set, is glued on the back of the wall.

Three ways to make it

  • Easy (preschool, ages 3–5): you cut out and punch the pieces. Kids color, draw and sew in and out while you hold the pieces. No scissors.
  • Medium (grades K–2): the craft in the first photo. Kids color, draw, cut, punch and sew.
  • Harder (grades 3–5): the craft in the second photo. Kids add a window with Aquila and Priscilla teaching Apollos, and a scroll with curled ends, because Apollos was mighty in the scriptures (Acts 18:24–26).

Questions to ask

While kids work, ask where Paul found Aquila and Priscilla (Acts 18:1–2), what their occupation was (18:3), where they sailed with Paul (18:18–19) and who they helped at Ephesus (18:24–26). Then read Acts 18:26 together.

Tips for the classroom

Before class, wrap tape around one end of each piece of yarn to make a stiff needle. For preschoolers, cut out and punch the pieces ahead of time, and hold the roof on the wall with paper clips while they sew.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a simple Priscilla and Aquila craft for preschoolers?

Cut out each child's roof, wall and verse strip ahead of time and punch the holes. Preschoolers color the tent, draw Priscilla, Aquila and Paul in the door, and sew the roof to the wall with a taped yarn end while you hold the pieces together. It takes about 15 minutes with no cutting by the kids.

How much does this Priscilla and Aquila craft cost?

Under 50 cents a child: one printed page, a piece of yarn, a little tape, a glue stick and crayons you already have. The template is free to print. The harder level adds a second page.

What Bible verse goes with this craft?

Acts 18:26 (KJV), "And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly." It is the memory verse for the whole Priscilla and Aquila set, printed on the verse strip that kids glue on the back.

How can older kids make this craft harder?

Use the harder level for grades 3–5. Kids add two pieces from page 3 to the tent's wall: a window where they draw Aquila and Priscilla with Apollos, and a scroll with curled ends, because Apollos was "mighty in the scriptures" and they "expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly" (Acts 18:24–26).
