This parable of the great supper craft turns one printed page into the master's house with the supper set and ready. A certain man "made a great supper, and bade many," and sent his servant to say, "Come; for all things are now ready" (Luke 14:16–17). When the guests made excuses, the servant brought in the poor, the maimed, the halt and the blind, and said, "yet there is room" (14:21–22). Kids draw the guests, seat them at the table and leave one seat empty. It comes in three levels, with the template and teacher notes in one free PDF.

The finished craft, harder level

What it looks like finished: easy and medium (first photo) and harder (second photo).

Why this craft works

  • Cheap and simple: one printed page, a glue stick, crayons and scissors.
  • Kids fill the house: they draw the guests and seat them at the table, "that my house may be filled" (Luke 14:23).
  • The empty seat teaches: there is still room, for them and for the people they invite (14:22).
  • It teaches the main point: come when God calls, with no excuses (14:17–18).
  • It carries the verse home: Luke 14:17 (KJV) is glued on the back of the card.

Three ways to make it

  • Easy (preschool, ages 3–5): you cut out the pieces. Kids color, draw the guests and glue them at the table. No scissors.
  • Medium (grades K–2): the craft in the first photo. Kids color, draw, cut out and glue the craft themselves.
  • Harder (grades 3–5): the craft in the second photo. Kids also make a road card from page 3 with the highways and hedges, and two more guests coming in (14:23).

Questions to ask

While kids work, ask what the servant said at supper time (Luke 14:17), what excuses the people made (14:18–20), who the servant brought in (14:21) and what he said after that (14:22). Then read Luke 14:17 together.

Tips for the classroom

Have kids draw the guests before they cut out the circles; small round pieces are easier to color while they're still on the page. For preschoolers, cut out the pieces ahead of time. Cardstock keeps the card stiff.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a simple great supper craft for preschoolers?

Cut out each child's house card and four guest circles ahead of time, and glue the verse strip on the back. Preschoolers color the table and the bread, draw a guest in each circle, and glue the guests at the table with your help, leaving one seat empty. About 15 minutes, no cutting by the kids.

How much does this great supper craft cost?

Under 50 cents a child: one printed page, a little glue, and crayons you already have. The template is free to print. The harder level adds a second page.

What Bible verse goes with this craft?

Luke 14:17 (KJV), "And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready." It is printed on the verse strip that kids glue on the back of the house card.

How can older kids make this craft harder?

Use the harder level for grades 3–5. Kids also color a road card from page 3 with the highway and hedges, glue it under the house card, and draw two more guests coming in on the road, because the lord said, "Go out into the highways and hedges" (Luke 14:23).
