- Ages
- Preschool (3–5), Early Elementary (K–2), Upper Elementary (3–5)
- Time
- 15 to 30 minutes
- Scripture
- John 2:1–11
- Bible story
- Jesus Turns Water into Wine
What you need
- The printed two waterpot strips and verse card (page 2), one per child (cardstock stands up best)
- Gray and blue crayons or markers
- Scissors and a glue stick
- The printed six flaps (page 3) and a red crayon or marker, one per child (harder level)
Steps
- Color the six waterpots and the band along the bottom gray, like stone (John 2:6). Color the oval of water in the top of each pot blue, all the way up to the brim (John 2:7).

- Cut out strip 1, strip 2 and the verse card on the dashed lines. Help younger children with the cutting.
- Fold the small tab at the end of strip 1 back on its dotted line. Put glue on the tab and press it on the back of waterpot 4, at the left end of strip 2, so the six waterpots make one long row.
- Turn the row over and glue the verse card on the back of waterpot 1. Read it together, "This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him" (John 2:11).
- Fold back and forth on the dotted lines between the pots, like a fan, and stand the row up on the table. Count the waterpots together, "six waterpots of stone" (John 2:6).

This Jesus turns water into wine craft for kids turns one printed page into the six waterpots of stone from John 2:6. Kids color the waterpots gray, color the water blue "up to the brim" (John 2:7), and fold the row back and forth so all six stand up on the table, with the memory verse on the back. It costs under 50 cents a child, takes about 20 minutes and comes in three levels, from preschool to 5th grade.

What it looks like finished: easy and medium (first photo) and harder (second photo).
Why this craft works
- Cheap and simple: one printed page, two crayons, scissors and a glue stick.
- Kids act out obeying Jesus: they fill every waterpot to the very top, just as the servants did when Jesus' mother said, "Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it" (John 2:5).
- It keeps the Bible's words: six waterpots of stone (John 2:6), filled up to the brim (2:7). The memory verse, John 2:11 (KJV), is on the back.
Three ways to make it
- Easy (preschool, ages 3–5): you cut the pieces and glue the row ahead of time. Kids color the waterpots and the water. No scissors.
- Medium (grades K–2): the craft in the first photo. Kids color, cut out the two strips and the verse card, glue them together and fold the row so it stands up.
- Harder (grades 3–5): kids add six red flaps from page 3, one over each waterpot. Lift a flap to see the water the servants filled them with (John 2:7); close it for "the water that was made wine" (John 2:9).
Questions to ask
While kids work, ask where the wedding was (John 2:1) and what Jesus' mother told the servants (2:5). Count the waterpots together and ask what they were made of (2:6) and how full the servants filled them (2:7). Ask who knew where it came from (2:9) and what the disciples did after this first miracle (2:11), then turn the row over and read John 2:11 together.
Tips for the classroom
Print page 2 on cardstock if you can, so the waterpots stand up well. Keep the talk on Jesus' power and on the servants' obeying. For preschoolers, do all the cutting ahead of time, so all they do is color and count.

Frequently asked questions
How do you make a simple water into wine craft for preschoolers?
Before class, cut out each child's two strips and glue them into one row. Preschoolers color the six waterpots gray and the water at the top of each pot blue, up to the brim. Then you fold the row back and forth so it stands up, and glue the verse card on the back. It takes about 15 minutes with no cutting by the kids.
Why does the craft have six waterpots?
The Bible says, "there were set there six waterpots of stone… containing two or three firkins apiece" (John 2:6). A firkin was about 10 gallons, so each pot held about 20 to 30 gallons. Jesus said, "Fill the waterpots with water," and the servants "filled them up to the brim" (John 2:7).
What Bible verse goes with this water into wine craft?
John 2:11 (KJV), "This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him." It is printed on a verse card that kids glue on the back of the first waterpot.
How can older kids make this craft harder?
Use the harder level for grades 3–5. Kids color six flaps from page 3 red and glue one by its tab over the top of each waterpot. Lift a flap and you see the blue water the servants filled them with (John 2:7); close it for "the water that was made wine" (John 2:9). Easy and medium cost under 50 cents a child.
