Scripture
Isaiah 9:6; Matthew 1–2; Luke 1–2; John 1:14

These are the Christmas Bible verses kids most need to know, all in the King James Version: God's promise in Isaiah, the angel's good news in Luke 2, the star in Matthew 2, and what Christmas means in John 1:14 and 1 Timothy 3:16. Print the cards, cut them apart and use them for:

  • Memory verses: one card a week through December.
  • Christmas cards: glue a verse inside a card a child makes for a neighbor or a shut-in.
  • Gift tags on treat bags for class parties and outreach.
  • A verse hunt: hide the cards around the room; whoever finds one reads it aloud.

The Christmas story sets: the lessons, crafts, coloring pages and puzzles for The Birth of Jesus (memory verse Luke 2:11), The Shepherds and the Angels (Luke 2:10) and The Wise Men (Matthew 2:10) tell the same story with the same memory verses. All three memory verses are on these cards.

The 16 verses

  • Isaiah 9:6: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
  • Isaiah 7:14: “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”
  • Micah 5:2: “But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.”
  • Matthew 1:21: “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.”
  • Matthew 1:23: “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.”
  • Luke 1:47: “And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.”
  • Luke 2:7: “And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.”
  • Luke 2:10: “And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.”

  • Luke 2:14: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”

  • Matthew 2:10: “When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.”
  • John 1:14: “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
  • 1 Timothy 3:16: “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.”
  • John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
  • 2 Corinthians 9:15: “Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.”

Talk about it

Christmas is about Jesus. Read Matthew 1:23 together and ask: what does Emmanuel mean? (God with us.) Then read 1 Timothy 3:16: God was manifest in the flesh. The baby in the manger is God who came to be with us, and His name is JESUS, "for he shall save his people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21).

Tips

  • Print on cardstock so the cards last. One sheet makes 8 cards.
  • Little ones: start with the short verses (Luke 1:47, Matthew 2:10, 2 Corinthians 9:15) and say them together.
  • Older kids: race to find each reference in a Bible before reading the card.
