Time
5 minutes (two 20-minute rehearsals)
Scripture
Luke 1:30–38; Luke 2:6–16; Matthew 2:1–11

What you need

  • A Bible or this script for the narrator
  • A baby doll wrapped in a small blanket, and a box or basket for the manger
  • Bathrobes, towels and rope belts for Mary, Joseph, shepherds and wise men
  • White robes or long white shirts for the angels
  • A paper star on a stick for the star holder
  • Three small boxes for the wise men's gifts

Steps

  1. Give every child a part. Shepherds, sheep and angels can be any number, so nobody is left out.
  2. Rehearse twice, about 20 minutes each. Practice walking to each spot more than the lines.
  3. The narrator reads the Bible verses slowly and nods when it is a child's turn.
  4. End with everyone saying Luke 2:11 together, then sing the first verse of Away in a Manger.

An easy nativity play made for preschoolers. A narrator reads the Christmas story straight from the King James Bible while the little ones act it out: Mary and Joseph, the angel Gabriel, angels, shepherds, sheep, a star and the wise men. Most children have one short line or a simple motion, so it works with just two rehearsals.

How it runs (about 5 minutes):

  1. The angel visits Mary (Luke 1:30–38).
  2. To Bethlehem, where Jesus is born and laid in a manger (Luke 2:6–7).
  3. The shepherds and the angels, and the shepherds hurry to find the baby (Luke 2:8–16).
  4. The wise men come later to the house where the young child is (Matthew 2:11), just as the Bible tells it.
  5. Finale: everyone says the memory verse, Luke 2:11, and sings Away in a Manger.

Tips for preschoolers

  • Lines are short on purpose. If a child freezes, the narrator says the line with them. Nobody minds.
  • Costumes: bathrobes, towels and rope belts for everyone; long white robes or shirts for the angels. Keep every costume modest and ankle-length.
  • Practice the walking, not the words. Tape an X on the floor for Mary, the manger and the shepherds.
  • The sheep steal the show. Give your youngest ones cotton-ball ears and let them crawl in with the shepherds.

Luke 2:11 is the memory verse of our Birth of Jesus story set, so the play, lesson, craft and puzzles all teach the same verse. For older kids, try Room for Jesus, and see the whole Christmas program for small churches.

Frequently asked questions

How long is this nativity play?

About 5 minutes. The narrator carries the story with short King James readings, and the children say one line each or do a simple motion.

How many children can be in it?

Anywhere from 8 to 30. Mary, Joseph, Gabriel and a star holder are single parts; angels, shepherds, sheep and wise men can be as many as you have.

Why are the wise men in a separate scene?

Because that is how the Bible tells it. The shepherds came to the manger the night Jesus was born (Luke 2:16), and the wise men came later to the house where the young child was (Matthew 2:11).
