- Ages
- Preschool (3–5), Early Elementary (K–2), Upper Elementary (3–5)
- Time
- 15 to 30 minutes
- Scripture
- Genesis 11:1–9
- Bible story
- The Tower of Babel
What you need
- The printed scene card, brick rows, houses and verse card template (page 2), one per child (cardstock is sturdiest)
- Crayons or markers in light blue, light brown, orange, yellow and brown
- Scissors and a glue stick
- The printed cloud and hidden verse page (page 3), one per child (harder level)
Steps
- Color the sky on the scene card light blue and the plain below the ground line light brown. Color all 5 brick rows orange. Color the 2 houses yellow, with brown doors and windows.

- Cut out the scene card, the 5 brick rows, the 2 houses and the verse card on the dashed lines. Help younger children with the cutting.
- Glue the biggest brick row in the middle of the scene card, with its bottom edge just below the ground line. The glue is your mortar, like the slime the builders used for morter (Genesis 11:3).
- Glue the next biggest row right on top of it. Keep going, biggest to smallest, until the smallest row is on top.
- Glue one house on each side of the tower, on the plain. The people said, "let us build us a city and a tower" (11:4).
- Turn the scene card over and glue the verse card on the back. Read Proverbs 16:18 together.

This Tower of Babel craft turns one printed page into the city and the tower from Genesis 11. The people said, "let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name" (Genesis 11:4). They "had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter" (11:3), so kids build their tower from five paper brick rows, with glue for the mortar, and add two houses for the city. The memory verse, Proverbs 16:18, goes on the back. It costs under 50 cents a child, takes about 20 minutes and comes in three levels, from preschool to 5th grade.

What it looks like finished: easy and medium (first photo) and harder (second photo).
Why this craft works
- Cheap and simple: one printed page, crayons and a glue stick.
- It uses the Bible's own words: brick instead of stone, slime for morter (Genesis 11:3), and "a city and a tower" on a plain in the land of Shinar (11:2, 11:4). The craft shows only what the passage names: no people, no height, no leader.
- It carries the lesson home: the verse card on the back says, "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall" (Proverbs 16:18, KJV).
Three ways to make it
- Easy (preschool, ages 3–5): you cut out the pieces. Kids color and glue the brick rows from biggest to smallest, then add the houses. No scissors.
- Medium (grades K–2): the craft in the first photo. Kids color, cut out the pieces, build the tower row by row, add the two houses and glue the verse card on the back.
- Harder (grades 3–5): kids add a white paper cloud from page 3 that lifts up on a folded tab, with Genesis 11:5 hidden under it: "And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower." Then they say the memory verse from memory.
Questions to ask
While kids work, ask what the people used instead of stone (Genesis 11:3), what two things they wanted to build and why (11:4), and what the LORD did (11:5–8). The people wanted to make a name for themselves, but the LORD confounded their language and scattered them, and "they left off to build the city" (11:8).
Tips for the classroom
Print page 2 on cardstock if you can, so the scene card stays flat. Lay out the brick rows from biggest to smallest before gluing, and line up the middle of each row with the one below it so the tower stands straight.

Frequently asked questions
How do you make a simple Tower of Babel craft for preschoolers?
Cut out each child's scene card, brick rows, houses and verse card ahead of time. Preschoolers color the sky, the plain, the bricks and the houses, then glue the brick rows from biggest to smallest to build the tower, with your help. It takes about 15 minutes with no cutting by the kids.
How much does this Tower of Babel craft cost?
Under 50 cents a child: one printed page (cardstock is best), crayons and a glue stick you already have. The template is free to print.
What Bible verse goes with a Tower of Babel craft?
Proverbs 16:18 (KJV), "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall." It is printed on the verse card that kids glue on the back. The harder level adds Genesis 11:5 under a lift-up cloud.
How can older kids make this Tower of Babel craft harder?
Use the harder level for grades 3–5. Kids add a paper cloud from page 3 above the tower. It lifts up on a folded tab to show Genesis 11:5, "And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower": the people wanted their tower to reach unto heaven, but the LORD came down. Then they say Proverbs 16:18 from memory.
