- Time
- 15 to 30 minutes
- Scripture
- 1 Kings 3
- Bible story
- Solomon Asks for Wisdom
What you need
- The printed night card, dream cloud and verse card template (page 2), one per child (cardstock is sturdiest)
- Crayons or markers in dark blue, yellow, green, gray, orange, red and light blue
- Scissors and a glue stick
- The printed treasure chest page (page 3), one per child, and a brown crayon (harder level)
Steps
- On the night card, color the sky dark blue, the moon and stars yellow, the hill green, the altar gray, the fire orange and the heart red. Color the dream cloud light blue.

- Cut out the night card, the dream cloud and the verse card on the dashed lines. Help younger children with the cutting.
- Turn the night card face down. Put glue on the back of the verse card and press it on the back of the night card. The verse faces out.
- Turn the night card face up. Put a thin line of glue on the back of the dream cloud along its top edge only, and press it over the heart so the cloud covers the heart.
- Tell the story with the card. Point to the altar at Gibeon, where Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings (1 Kings 3:4). "In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee" (3:5). Lift the cloud to show the heart. Solomon asked for "an understanding heart" (3:9), and God gave him "a wise and an understanding heart" (3:12). Turn the card over and read James 1:5 together.

This Solomon craft turns one printed page into a night card at Gibeon, where "the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee" (1 Kings 3:5). Kids lift a dream cloud to find the heart, because Solomon asked for "an understanding heart" (3:9), and God gave him "a wise and an understanding heart" (3:12). The altar on the hill shows where Solomon offered (3:4), and James 1:5 goes on the back. It costs under 50 cents a child, takes about 20 minutes and comes in three levels, from preschool to 5th grade.

What it looks like finished: easy and medium (first photo) and harder (second photo).
Why this craft works
- Cheap and simple: one printed page, crayons, scissors and a glue stick.
- Kids find the answer: lifting the cloud to find the heart shows what Solomon asked God for, and it gives kids a picture of James 1:5: when we need wisdom, we can ask God.
- It keeps the Bible's details: a dream by night at Gibeon (1 Kings 3:5), the altar of the great high place (3:4), and an understanding heart (3:9, 3:12). For older kids, a treasure chest for the riches God gave too, "that which thou hast not asked" (3:13). No people are drawn. The verse card on the back has James 1:5 (KJV).
Three ways to make it
- Easy (preschool, ages 3–5): you cut out the pieces and glue the verse card on. Kids color, and you help them glue the cloud over the heart. No scissors.
- Medium (grades K–2): the craft in the first photo. Kids color, cut out the pieces, glue the verse card on the back and glue the cloud over the heart.
- Harder (grades 3–5): kids add the treasure chest from page 3 in the corner of the card, with a lid that lifts to show the gold coins. Then they say the memory verse from memory.
Questions to ask
While kids work, ask where Solomon went to offer (1 Kings 3:4) and what God said to him in the dream (3:5). Then lift the cloud and ask what Solomon asked for (3:9), and whether the LORD was pleased (3:10). For the harder level, lift the chest lid and ask what else God gave him (3:13).
Tips for the classroom
Print page 2 on cardstock if you can, so the cloud lifts well. Glue the cloud and the chest lid by their top edges only. For preschoolers, cut out the pieces and glue the verse card on ahead of time, so all they do is color, lift and tell the story.

Frequently asked questions
How do you make a simple Solomon craft for preschoolers?
Before class, cut out each child's night card, dream cloud and verse card, and glue the verse card on the back. Preschoolers color the sky, the stars, the altar and the heart, then you help them glue the cloud on by its top edge. They lift the cloud to find the heart. It takes about 15 minutes with no cutting by the kids.
How much does this Solomon craft cost?
Under 50 cents a child: one printed page (cardstock is best), a little glue and crayons you already have. The template is free to print.
What Bible verse goes with a Solomon craft?
James 1:5 (KJV), "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him." It is printed on the verse card that kids glue on the back.
How can older kids make this Solomon craft harder?
Use the harder level for grades 3–5. Kids also color and cut out the treasure chest from page 3 and glue it on the ground in the corner, with a lid that lifts to show gold coins. God gave Solomon riches and honour too, "that which thou hast not asked" (1 Kings 3:13). Then they say James 1:5 from memory.
