What you need

  • The printed coats and verse card template (page 2), one per child (cardstock is sturdiest)
  • A piece of yarn about 24 inches long per child
  • Crayons or markers in blue, green, red and brown
  • Scissors and a glue stick
  • The printed biggest coat page (page 3), one per child, a purple crayon, a hole punch, a second piece of yarn about 36 inches long and tape (harder level)

Steps

  1. Color the coats. Color the small coat blue, the middle coat green and the big coat red. Color every belt brown. Keep the short marks below each belt easy to see: one mark for year 1, two for year 2, three for year 3.Color the coats. Color the small coat blue, the middle coat green and the big coat red. Color every belt brown. Keep the short marks below each belt easy to see: one mark for year 1, two for year 2, three for year 3.
  2. Cut out the three coats and the verse card on the dashed lines. Help younger children with the cutting.
  3. Lay the yarn straight across the table. Put the coats face down under it in a row, the small coat at the left, the middle coat in the middle and the big coat at the right.
  4. Fold each coat's top tab down over the yarn on the dotted line and glue the tab to the back of the coat, so the coat hangs on the yarn.
  5. Glue the verse card on the back of the big coat, below its tab. Turn the line over so the coats face up, and read the verse together.
  6. Tell the story with the coats: his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year (1 Samuel 2:19). The coats get bigger to show that Samuel grew (2:21, 2:26).Tell the story with the coats: his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year (1 Samuel 2:19). This Hannah and Samuel craft turns one printed page and a piece of yarn into a row of little coats, small to big. Hannah prayed for a son, and God gave her Samuel (1 Samuel 1:20). She kept her promise and lent him to the LORD (1:28), and then "his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year" (2:19). Each coat is a little bigger, because the child Samuel grew (2:26). The memory verse goes on the back. It costs under 50 cents a child, takes about 20 minutes and comes in three levels, from preschool to 5th grade.

What it looks like finished: easy and medium (first photo) and harder (second photo).

Why this craft works

  • Cheap and simple: one printed page, a piece of yarn, crayons, scissors and a glue stick.
  • Kids see Samuel grow: three coats, small to big, with one, two and three marks below their belts for the years Hannah came up to Shiloh (1 Samuel 2:19).
  • It keeps the Bible's details: the Bible names a little coat, brought from year to year, and says Samuel grew (2:21, 2:26). It gives no colors or sizes, so the craft doesn't claim any. No people are drawn. The verse card on the back has 1 Samuel 1:27 (KJV).

Three ways to make it

  • Easy (preschool, ages 3–5): you cut out the coats and the verse card. Kids color, glue the coats on the yarn with your help and glue the verse on the back. No scissors.
  • Medium (grades K–2): the craft in the first photo. Kids color, cut out the coats, hang them on the yarn and glue the verse card on the back.
  • Harder (grades 3–5): kids add the biggest coat from page 3, punch holes around its edge and lace yarn through them. Then they say the memory verse from memory.

Questions to ask

While kids work, ask what Hannah asked the LORD for (1 Samuel 1:11) and what Eli thought when only her lips moved (1:13). Then point to the coats and ask who made Samuel a little coat and how often she brought it (2:19), and what Samuel did at the house of the LORD (2:18).

Tips for the classroom

Print page 2 on cardstock if you can, so the coats hang flat. Cut the yarn before class. For preschoolers, cut out the coats ahead of time, so all they do is color, glue and count the years.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a simple Hannah craft for preschoolers?

Cut out each child's three coats and verse card ahead of time. Preschoolers color the coats and belts, then glue each coat's tab over the yarn with your help and glue the verse card on the back of the big coat. It takes about 15 minutes with no cutting by the kids.

How much does this Hannah and Samuel craft cost?

Under 50 cents a child: one printed page (cardstock is best), a piece of yarn, and crayons and a glue stick you already have. The template is free to print.

What Bible verse goes with a Hannah craft?

1 Samuel 1:27 (KJV), "For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him:" It is printed on the verse card that kids glue on the back of the big coat.

How can older kids make this Hannah craft harder?

Use the harder level for grades 3–5. Kids also color and cut out the biggest coat from page 3, punch a hole on every circle, lace a second piece of yarn in and out around its edge, and hang it at the end of the line as year 4. Then they say 1 Samuel 1:27 from memory.
