Preschool Bible Lessons: 12 Simple Lessons for Ages 3–5

Preschool Bible lessons work best short and hands-on: one Bible story told with a prop, one big idea the children say back to you, an action to get the wiggles out, and a short King James phrase they echo. Below is a 30-minute plan and 12 simple lessons for ages 3 to 5, from Creation to Jesus and the children.

A 30-minute preschool Bible lesson plan

Time What to do
5 min Welcome and play. Table toys or a coloring page while children arrive.
5 min Story circle. Open a real Bible on your lap, then tell the story with your prop. Short sentences, big expressions.
1 min Big idea. Say it three times with a motion: whisper it, say it, shout it.
5 min Move. Do the action for the story (below).
10 min Make. A simple craft or coloring page from the Bible story page.
3 min Pray. Short echo prayer: you say a line, they say it back, ending "in Jesus' name, amen."

Tips that save the morning: sit at their eye level, keep the prop hidden in a bag until story time, and say children's names often. If attention fades, stand up and do the action again.

12 simple preschool Bible lessons

1. God made everything (Creation)

  • Show it: a bag with a rock, a leaf, a toy animal and a small mirror ("God made me, too!").
  • Do it: stretch arms wide for the sky, wiggle fingers for stars, flap for birds.
  • Say it: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." Genesis 1:1 (KJV)

2. God keeps His promises (Noah's ark)

  • Show it: a toy boat, animals in pairs, and paper strips in rainbow colors.
  • Do it: march animals "two and two" into the ark (Genesis 7:9) while everyone makes the animal sounds.
  • Say it: "I do set my bow in the cloud…" Genesis 9:13 (KJV)

3. God takes care of me (Baby Moses)

  • Show it: a basket with a baby doll in a blanket.
  • Do it: rock the baby; his sister watched from far away (Exodus 2:4), so children "peek" from behind their hands.
  • Say it: "…he careth for you." 1 Peter 5:7 (KJV)

4. God helps me be brave (David and Goliath)

  • Show it: five smooth stones in a little bag (1 Samuel 17:40).
  • Do it: stand on tiptoes tall like Goliath, then crouch small like David, then jump and shout "God is bigger!"
  • Say it: "What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee." Psalm 56:3 (KJV)

5. I can pray to God anytime (Daniel in the lions' den)

  • Show it: a stuffed lion.
  • Do it: kneel and fold hands like Daniel, who prayed three times a day (Daniel 6:10). Then everyone roars, and God shuts the lions' mouths: hands over mouths!
  • Say it: "Pray without ceasing." 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (KJV)

6. Obey God right away (Jonah)

  • Show it: a blue blanket for the sea and a paper fish.
  • Do it: point to one wall for Nineveh, the other for Tarshish. Call "Go to Nineveh!" and everyone walks the right way.
  • Say it: "We ought to obey God…" Acts 5:29 (KJV)

7. Jesus came for me (Jesus is born)

  • Show it: a baby doll wrapped in a cloth in a small box of hay.
  • Do it: rock baby Jesus, then tiptoe like shepherds to see Him.
  • Say it: "Unto you is born this day… a Saviour." Luke 2:11 (KJV)

8. Jesus is stronger than my fears (Jesus calms the storm)

  • Show it: a blue sheet held by everyone around the edge, with a toy boat on top.
  • Do it: make the wind blow and the waves shake, then say "Peace, be still!" and everyone freezes.
  • Say it: "Peace, be still." Mark 4:39 (KJV)

9. Jesus loves me and looks for me (The lost sheep)

  • Show it: a toy sheep hidden somewhere in the room before class.
  • Do it: everyone searches; cheer when it's found.
  • Say it: "…I have found my sheep which was lost." Luke 15:6 (KJV)

10. I can share with Jesus (Jesus feeds the 5,000)

  • Show it: a basket with five small rolls or crackers and two paper fish.
  • Do it: count five loaves and two fish on your fingers, then pass the basket.
  • Say it: "…five barley loaves, and two small fishes…" John 6:9 (KJV)

11. Jesus wants to be my friend (Zacchaeus)

  • Show it: a paper tree taped to the wall, or a sturdy step stool.
  • Do it: crouch small like Zacchaeus, "climb" the tree, then hop down when Jesus calls.
  • Say it: "Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down." Luke 19:5 (KJV)

12. Jesus loves children (Jesus and the children)

  • Show it: a picture of each child (or a mirror).
  • Do it: children walk to you one at a time for a high five. ("Suffer" in the King James means "let.")
  • Say it: "Suffer the little children to come unto me." Mark 10:14 (KJV)

Teaching toddlers (ages 2–3)

Keep the prop, the big idea and the action; tell the story in about two minutes. Toddlers learn by doing the same thing many times, so it's fine to teach the same story for a month. Swap the craft for a sticker on a coloring page, and pray one short sentence they can echo.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a preschool Bible lesson be?

About 30 minutes in total, but in short pieces. Preschoolers listen for roughly 5 minutes at a time, so tell the story in 5 minutes, then move, make something and pray.

What Bible stories are good for preschoolers?

Stories with a clear picture and a simple truth. Creation, Noah's ark, baby Moses, David and Goliath, Daniel and the lions, Jonah, the birth of Jesus, Jesus calming the storm, the lost sheep, the boy's lunch, Zacchaeus and Jesus blessing the children.

How do you teach a Bible verse to a 3-year-old?

Use a short phrase, add a motion for the key words, and say it together as an echo several times. Repeat the same verse for a few weeks; young children learn by repetition.

How do you explain Jesus to a preschooler?

Keep it short and true. God made you and loves you. Jesus is God who came to earth as a baby (1 Timothy 3:16; Luke 2:11). He loves you, He is always with you, and you can talk to Him anytime.

Can I use these lessons with toddlers?

Yes. For ages 2–3, keep only the prop, the big idea and the action, and skip the craft or make it a sticker or coloring page. Tell the story in about 2 minutes.
