What you need
- 2 baking pans or plastic trays with sides
- A flat rock big enough to set a small house on
- About 2 cups of dry play sand
- 2 small "houses" (paper cups turned upside down, or 3–4 toy blocks each)
- A pitcher of water and a towel
- A Bible, marked at Matthew 7:24–27
Steps
- Before class, set the rock in one pan and pile loose, dry sand into a mound in the other. Try the water once at home.
- Show both pans and set a house on the rock and a house on the sand.
- Read Matthew 7:24–27. Point out that both men heard Jesus' words.
- Pour water slowly over the house on the rock for the rain and floods. It stands.
- Pour water over the house on the sand. The sand washes away and the house falls.
- Explain that the wise man heard Jesus' sayings and did them, and the foolish man heard them and did not do them.
- Ask the questions, share the gospel, and close in prayer.
This wise and foolish builders object lesson shows kids what Jesus meant in Matthew 7:24–27: both men heard His words, but only the wise man did them, and only his house fell not when the rain, floods and winds came. You need a rock, some sand, two little houses and a pitcher of water. It takes about 10 minutes and comes with a printable teacher script.
How to use it
Set one house on a rock and one on a mound of sand in two baking pans. Read the passage, then pour water over each house for the rain and floods. The house on the rock stands. The house on the sand washes away. The script gives you every Do and Say cue, three questions with answers, a short gospel moment and a closing prayer.
The main point
Both builders heard the same words, and both houses had the same rain, floods and winds. The difference was doing what Jesus said. Kids leave with a picture they won't forget: hearing and doing is building on the rock.
Tips
- Practice once at home. Loose, dry play sand washes away best; packed, damp sand can hold the house up.
- Use pans with sides and pour slowly over a towel.
- For preschoolers, let them feel the hard rock and the soft sand first, then make rain sounds while you pour.
- Use the wise and foolish builders word search as a follow-up activity.
