This free armor of God Sunday school lesson teaches kids that we are strong in the Lord when we put on the armor God gives us. It comes in four age levels, each a separate printable teacher lesson, plus one take-home sheet for families. Pick the one that fits your class. Everything is in the order you teach it.

Choose your age level

  • Preschool (ages 3–5), 20–30 minutes, 2 pages: a short teaching with hand motions and repeat-after-me lines for each piece of armor, three simple questions, a shortened memory verse ("Put on the whole armour of God") with a motion, and a Shield of Faith game.
  • Kindergarten to 2nd grade, 45 minutes, 3 pages: who wrote Ephesians and each piece of armor in simple words, five recall questions with answers, the Gear Up Relay and the Armor Up memory verse motions.
  • 3rd to 5th grade, 45–60 minutes, 3 pages: kids look up verses in their own Bibles as you teach (Paul in chains, the real fight, how many times Paul says "stand," every piece of armor and praying always), five thinking questions and three recall questions, and a Bible look-up race.
  • Preteens (ages 11–12), 45–60 minutes, 3 pages: students read Ephesians 6:10–20 out loud, see Jesus use the sword of the Spirit in Matthew 4, and discuss standing in the Lord's strength, lies people their age hear, and prayer. Six discussion questions, a journal page, and two memory verses (Ephesians 6:11 and Psalm 119:11).

Lesson at a glance

  • Bible passage: Ephesians 6:10–18 (6:10–20 for older kids)
  • Main point: We are strong in the Lord when we put on the armor God gives us.
  • Memory verse: Ephesians 6:11 (KJV), with Psalm 119:11 added for preteens
  • Ages: preschool to preteen, in four versions

Lesson outline (the same in every version)

  1. Opening game: a short game about gear that keeps people safe, or about telling truth from tricks.
  2. Bible teaching: who wrote Ephesians and why, then each piece of armor in order: truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, the Word of God and prayer. Every point has its verse reference so you can check it.
  3. Questions to ask: with answers, at the right level for each age.
  4. Memory verse: a game or motion to help kids learn Ephesians 6:11.
  5. What this means for us: the helmet of salvation, the gospel (Acts 2:38) and a challenge for the week.
  6. Activity: the armor of God word search, the Shield of Faith game, a Bible look-up race or a journal page, depending on the age.
  7. Prayer.

Tips for teaching the armor of God

  • Bring real objects. A belt, a helmet and a pot lid make each piece concrete for younger kids.
  • Read Ephesians 6:17 straight from your Bible. The sword is the Word of God, so let kids see you holding it.
  • Keep the devil talk calm. The point is God's strength, not fear. Each lesson gives you a short, calm answer if a child asks.
  • Short on time? Do the teaching, three questions and the memory verse. That is a solid 25-minute lesson.

Frequently asked questions

How long does this armor of God lesson take?

It depends on the age level. The preschool lesson takes 20 to 30 minutes, the kindergarten to 2nd grade lesson about 45 minutes, and the 3rd to 5th grade and preteen lessons 45 to 60 minutes. For a short class, do the Bible teaching, three questions and the memory verse.

What age is this lesson for?

All ages from preschool to preteen. The lesson comes in four separate teacher PDFs: preschool (ages 3 to 5), kindergarten to 2nd grade, 3rd to 5th grade, and preteens (ages 11 to 12). Each one teaches the same Bible passage at the right length and reading level, with its own questions and activity.

What is the main point of the armor of God for kids?

We are strong in the Lord, not in ourselves. God gives us His armor so we can stand against the devil's tricks (Ephesians 6:10–11), and we put it on by living by God's truth, faith, His Word and prayer (Ephesians 6:14–18).

What are the pieces of the armor of God?

The belt of truth and the breastplate of righteousness (Ephesians 6:14), shoes of the gospel of peace (6:15), the shield of faith (6:16), and the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God (6:17). Paul then adds "praying always" (6:18).

Who wrote about the armor of God, and why?

The apostle Paul, in his letter to the believers at Ephesus (Ephesians 1:1). He wrote as a prisoner, "an ambassador in bonds" (Ephesians 4:1, 6:20), to help Christians stand strong against the devil's tricks (Ephesians 6:11).
