What you need

  • The printed honeycomb template (page 2) on yellow copy paper or yellow cardstock, one per child
  • 1 sheet of dark blue construction paper per child (9 by 12 inches)
  • Crayons or markers in orange, black, brown, blue and gray
  • Scissors and a glue stick
  • The printed fact hexagons page (page 3) on yellow paper, one per child (harder level)

Steps

  1. Color the pictures. Color the lion's mane orange, the bee's stripes black, the ropes brown, the water blue, the gate brown and the pillars gray.Color the pictures. Color the lion's mane orange, the bee's stripes black, the ropes brown, the water blue, the gate brown and the pillars gray.
  2. In the oval on the plain hexagon, draw Samson praying (Judges 16:28).
  3. Cut out the seven hexagons and the verse strip on the dashed lines. Help younger children with the cutting.
  4. Glue the hexagon with your drawing in the middle of the dark blue paper.
  5. Glue the other six hexagons around it, edges touching, to make a honeycomb. Go around in story order, starting at the top left and moving to the right like a clock: lion, bee, ropes, water, gate, pillars.
  6. Glue the verse strip on the back and read it together.Glue the verse strip on the back and read it together.

This Samson craft turns one printed page into a honeycomb that tells the story from Judges 13–16. Six yellow hexagons show the lion, the bee and honey, the ropes that fell off, the water God gave, the city gate and the pillars, around a middle hexagon where kids draw Samson praying, "strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once" (Judges 16:28). The memory verse goes on the back. It costs under 50 cents a child, takes about 20 minutes and comes in three levels, from preschool to 5th grade.

The finished craft, harder level

What it looks like finished: easy and medium (first photo) and harder (second photo).

Why this craft works

  • Cheap and simple: one page printed on yellow paper, one sheet of construction paper and crayons.
  • It tells the whole story in order: kids glue the pictures around the honeycomb like a clock, from the lion (Judges 14:5–6) to Samson's last prayer (16:28), so they can retell it at home.
  • It points to God, not to muscles: every picture is a time God gave Samson strength or answered his prayer (14:6, 15:14, 15:19, 16:28).
  • It carries the verse home: the template includes Psalm 46:1 (KJV) on a strip to glue on the back.

Three ways to make it

  • Easy (preschool, ages 3–5): you cut out the hexagons. Kids color, draw Samson in the oval and glue the honeycomb with your help. No scissors.
  • Medium (grades K–2): the craft in the first photo. Kids color, draw, cut out the seven hexagons and glue them into a honeycomb in story order.
  • Harder (grades 3–5): kids glue a fact hexagon from page 3 on the back of each picture and glue the pictures as flaps that open like a book, each with a short fact and its Bible reference. Then they say the verse from memory.

Questions to ask

While kids work, ask who made Samson strong (Judges 14:6), what happened to the new ropes (15:14), what Samson did when he was thirsty (15:18–19) and what he prayed at the end (16:28). Samson's strength came from God all along: "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (Psalm 46:1).

Tips for the classroom

Print page 2 on yellow paper so the honeycomb looks like honey without extra coloring. For preschoolers, cut out the hexagons ahead of time so all they do is color, draw and glue. No one is drawn on the template; kids draw Samson themselves in the oval. The honeycomb comes from the story too: Samson found bees and honey in the lion and made a riddle about it (Judges 14:8, 14:14).

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a simple Samson craft for preschoolers?

Cut out each child's seven hexagons and verse strip ahead of time. Preschoolers color the pictures, draw Samson in the oval and glue the hexagons on dark blue paper in a honeycomb with your help. It takes about 15 minutes with no cutting by the kids.

How much does this Samson craft cost?

Under 50 cents a child: one page printed on yellow paper, one sheet of construction paper and crayons you already have. The template is free to print.

What Bible verse goes with a Samson craft?

Psalm 46:1 (KJV), "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." It is printed on the verse strip that kids glue on the back.

How can older kids make this Samson craft harder?

Use the harder level for grades 3–5. Kids glue a fact hexagon from page 3 on the back of each picture and glue the pictures on as flaps that open like a book, so they can retell the story in order with the Bible references. Then they say Psalm 46:1 from memory.
