Ages

Time
15 to 30 minutes
Scripture
Matthew 6:6–13

What you need

  • The printed room, door and verse strip template (page 2), one per child (cardstock is sturdiest)
  • 1 sheet of light green construction paper per child (9 by 12 inches)
  • Crayons or markers in brown, yellow, orange, light blue, blue, red and light brown
  • Scissors and a glue stick
  • The printed pocket and prayer cards page (page 3) and a pencil, one per child (harder level)

Steps

  1. Color the pictures on the room panel. The cloud is light blue with yellow rays, the crown yellow, the bread light brown, the heart red, the shield blue, and the shining light yellow and orange. Color the door brown and its knob yellow. Leave the tab white.
  2. Cut out the room panel, the door with its tab, and the verse strip on the dashed lines. Help younger children with the cutting.
  3. Hold the light green paper the wide way. Glue the whole back of the room panel and press it in the middle of the paper.
  4. Fold the door's tab back on the dotted line, then open it again. Put glue on the back of the tab only. Lay the door right on top of the room panel so the edges match, and press the tab down on the paper at the left side.
  5. Open the door. It swings open to the left like a real door and shows the six pictures.
  6. Glue the verse strip on the back of the green paper and read it together.
  7. Pray. Open the door and touch each picture as you talk to God about that part of Jesus' prayer, in your own words.

This Lord's Prayer craft turns one printed page into a little prayer door, because Jesus said, "enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret" (Matthew 6:6). Kids color six picture reminders, one for each part of the prayer in Matthew 6:9–13, glue a door over them that really opens and shuts, and carry the memory verse home on the back. It costs under 50 cents a child, takes about 20 minutes and comes in three levels, from preschool to 5th grade.

The finished craft, harder level

What it looks like finished: easy and medium (first photo) and harder (second photo).

Why this craft works

  • Cheap and simple: one printed page, one sheet of construction paper and crayons.
  • It teaches what Jesus taught: shut the door and talk to God (Matthew 6:6). Behind the door, six pictures walk kids through the prayer: honor God (cloud), His will (crown), daily bread (bread), forgiving (heart), help against evil (shield), and everything is His (shining light).
  • It helps kids really pray: the pictures are reminders to pray in their own words, the way Jesus said, "After this manner therefore pray ye" (6:9), not a saying to repeat.
  • It carries the verse home: the template includes Matthew 6:9 (KJV) on a strip to glue on the back.

Three ways to make it

  • Easy (preschool, ages 3–5): you cut out the pieces and glue the room and the door's tab in place. Kids color the pictures and the door, then open and shut it. No scissors.
  • Medium (grades K–2): the craft in the first photo. Kids color, cut out the pieces, glue the room panel and glue the door by its tab so it opens and shuts.
  • Harder (grades 3–5): kids also make a pocket and six prayer cards from page 3, write their own short prayer on each card, and keep them in the pocket beside the door. Then they say the verse from memory.

Questions to ask

While kids work, ask where Jesus said to go to pray (Matthew 6:6), whether God knows what we need before we ask (6:8), what we ask for every day (6:11) and who we forgive (6:12, 6:14). The teacher pages list what each of the six pictures means, with its line from Matthew 6:9–13.

Tips for the classroom

Print page 2 on cardstock if you can. For preschoolers, cut out the pieces and glue the rooms and door tabs ahead of time, so all they do is color and open the door. Remind kids to glue only the door's tab, so the door opens and shuts.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a simple Lord's Prayer craft for preschoolers?

Cut out each child's pieces ahead of time, glue the room panel on the light green paper and glue the door's tab beside it. Preschoolers color the six pictures and the door, then open and shut the door as you talk about each part of the prayer. It takes about 15 minutes with no cutting by the kids.

How much does this Lord's Prayer craft cost?

Under 50 cents a child: one printed page (cardstock is best), one sheet of construction paper and crayons you already have. The template is free to print.

What Bible verse goes with a Lord's Prayer craft?

Matthew 6:9 (KJV), "After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name." It is printed on the verse strip that kids glue on the back.

How can older kids make this Lord's Prayer craft harder?

Use the harder level for grades 3–5. Kids also make a pocket from page 3 and six prayer cards, one for each part of the prayer. On each card they write their own short prayer, then keep the cards in the pocket and pray through them during the week.
