Ages
Preschool (3–5), Early Elementary (K–2), Upper Elementary (3–5)
Time
15 to 30 minutes
Scripture
1 Samuel 17

What you need

  • The printed bag, stones and verse card template (page 2), one per child (cardstock is sturdiest)
  • Crayons or markers in brown and gray
  • Scissors and a glue stick
  • A 24-inch piece of yarn per child and tape, for the bag strap
  • The printed sling page (page 3), one per child (harder level)
  • Two 20-inch pieces of yarn per child and a hole punch (harder level)

Steps

  1. Color the bag piece brown and the five stones gray.
  2. Cut out the bag, the five stones and the verse card on the dashed lines. Help younger children with the cutting.
  3. Turn the bag over so the colored side is down. Fold the two side tabs up on the dotted lines and put glue on them.
  4. Fold the front up on the dotted line and press it onto the glued tabs. Now the bag has a pocket, and the colors are on the outside.
  5. Tape the ends of the yarn inside the top corners of the bag to make a strap.
  6. Put the five stones in the bag and count them together. Fold the flap down to close the bag.
  7. Glue the verse card on the back of the bag and read it together.

This David and Goliath craft turns one printed page into a shepherd's bag like the one David carried, with five smooth stones to count inside. Kids color the bag and stones, fold the bag, add a yarn strap and glue the memory verse on the back. It costs under 50 cents a child, takes about 20 minutes and comes with a free printable template. It comes in three levels, from preschool to 5th grade.

The finished craft, harder level

What it looks like finished: easy and medium (first photo) and harder (second photo).

Why this craft works

  • Cheap and simple: one printed page, a piece of yarn and crayons.
  • It retells the story: David "chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag" (1 Samuel 17:40). Kids count the same five stones into their own bag.
  • It carries the verse home: the template includes 1 Samuel 17:47 (KJV) on a card to glue on the back.

Three ways to make it

  • Easy (preschool, ages 3–5): you cut out the pieces and fold the bag. Kids color the bag and stones and count the five stones into the bag. No scissors.
  • Medium (grades K–2): the craft in the first photo. Kids color, cut out and fold the bag, add the yarn strap, count in the stones and glue the verse card on the back.
  • Harder (grades 3–5): kids make the bag, then a paper sling from page 3 with a yarn string tied through each end and one stone in the pouch. Then they say the verse from memory.

Questions to ask

While kids work, ask how God helped David with the lion and the bear (1 Samuel 17:34–37), how many stones David chose (17:40), and how many it took to make Goliath fall (17:49–50). David came in the name of the LORD, and the battle is the LORD's (17:45–47).

Tips for the classroom

Print page 2 on cardstock and cut the yarn before class. For preschoolers, cut out the pieces and fold the bags too, so all they do is color and count. For the harder level, print page 3 as well and have a hole punch ready. The sling is just for show; nobody swings it.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a simple David and Goliath craft for preschoolers?

Cut out each child's bag, stones and verse card ahead of time. Preschoolers color the bag brown and the stones gray, then you fold and glue the bag and tape on the yarn strap. They count the five stones into the bag. It takes about 15 minutes with no cutting by the kids.

How much does this David and Goliath craft cost?

Under 50 cents a child: one printed page (cardstock is best), a piece of yarn and crayons you already have. The template is free to print.

What Bible verse goes with a David and Goliath craft?

1 Samuel 17:47 (KJV), "And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD’S, and he will give you into our hands." It is printed on the verse card that kids glue on the back of the bag.

How can older kids make this David and Goliath craft harder?

Use the harder level for grades 3–5. After the shepherd's bag, kids cut out the paper sling from page 3, punch a hole at each end, tie a piece of yarn through each hole and lay one paper stone in the sling. Then they say 1 Samuel 17:47 from memory.
